Borneo questions
Hello
I am planing to make my way back from Bali/Indonesia to Malaysia over Borneo. (March 2012)
Has anybody recently tryed this rout, or can give me links or further information?

Is there a regular Car-Ferry from Java to Borneo? Witch ports? Costs?

Is is possible to cross the Landborder on Borneo between Indonesia and Malaysia? Any advices?

Is there a regular Car-Ferry from Borneo to the malayian pennisular? Witch ports? Costs?

I believe there is a ferry from Surabaya to Banjarmasin.
What route were you looking at while travelling through Kalimantan?

My info is 4 years old, so could all be changed by now...


But at least back then, there was no ferry boat between Western Malaysia and Borneo (the travellers, who had brought bikes to Borneo from there around that time, had had to freight them in).

I believe the Tanjung Priok harbour (Jakarta), or Surabaya, should be your best options for ferries to Borneo. But finding out about when they would leave, was more than a bit challenging: for example the Pelni company, that operated many of those routes, had not updated their webpages during the last 3-4 years!

Also to get a big bike into the boat as your luggage on those longer routes could become a headache. At least Pelni´s official policy at that time was, that they do not transport motorbikes (but I didn´t get to actually test, if that was really so).

Hi,
Thanks for the Infos

The only way I (google maps) know is from Banjarmasin cockwise arround Kalimantan and entering into Malaysia near Kuching. But I have no idea if the bordercrossing with a motorbike is possible there.

So who has done it?

And how to get back to West-Malaysia? Flying is a expensive option, as I travel with a Sidecar...

We did it in April 2009 so things may have changed, but here goes

We got a car ferry from Parepare in Sulawesi to Nunukan from here a speedboat ride with the bikes on the front of the speed boat to Tawau Malaysia.

Rode around Borneo anti clockwise to Kuching and carried on over the land border to Pontianak Indonesia, then a car ferry to Semarang Java.

As for mainland Malaysia we put the bikes on an onion boat in Dumai Sumatra over to Port Klang Malaysia.

hi i did my Indonesia tour last year. Start from Sumatera island to Java island then shipped the bike to Kalimantan - borneo via surabaya port to Pontianak i ride to Indonesia border Entikong-tepedu. it took almost 1 half day sailing across java sea to pontianak with a big ferry...cant remember how much it cost but it willnot cut throat charges. The bike and passenger have a different fare and the ship come with a room and a single bed. Crossing the border willtake u at least 8 hours from pontianak (my bike is 125cc) and the road condition is something like Luang phrabang-to Vientienne (laos) just that is not crossing the mountain. The custom gate will closed at 6pm Indonesia time..if u cant make the will be a few guest house at Entikong border. Pass thru the custom at entikong side will be a lot of question as they dont really know about the carnet as u have to show them what to do, but there is no problem on malaysia side custom as they know and they will ask u for the carnet....goodluck

I spoke to many malaysian bikers, and it seems that there is no regular Car-Ferry between Borneo and Malaysia-Mainland.

anyway, runing out of time I might not go to borneo this time.
