Across Pakistan in Late Oct. Sensible?

Hey folks,

A little over a week until my wife and I depart for Oz. We were originally planning to ride via Pakistan but are concerned by the terrible flooding.

Perhaps it is a selfish/naieve question but is it likely that we would be able to cross from Iran to India at this stage? Or are the roads/bridges too badly damaged, fuel not available, safety a problem etc?

We would be disappointed to miss it because we hear it is a great country and have friends we can visit there. Any info from the ground?

Neil

Only 60 kms patch of road between Jacobabad- Sukkur is affected which you would be crossing Neil. This road is also working and shouldnt be much of a problem for bikes although you'l have to negotiate more potholes and bumps.
Main KKH is closed at Besham-Dassu but alternate route of Babusar- Chillas is open for traffic (4x4s and motorcycles).
Fuel is not a problem here and 180 million people are leading normal lives. Situation isnt as bad as media makes us believe.
I hope this information helps.

Omie is right.

We've just crossed from the Iranian border at Taftan and are currently in Lahore.

I posted more information on another thread that there is really only 1 Northern route open to non-Pakistani people.

The roads are poor, potholes are huge, often roads are single lane with a 2ft drop either side. Oncoming buses never give way, trucks sometimes do.

You will have an security escort half-way across the country, use it!

We only saw the devastating effects of the flooding in 1 town were tents were errected along the whole of road side.

Fuel is available everywhere... so is food & water, we imagined the worst, but all shops appear fully stocked.

Pakistani people are wonderful, they are kind and helpful.

Let me know if you have any questions and I will do my best to answer them when I can get internet access.

Thanks for the informative and reassuring post. We got our Pak visa about a week ago so hopefully will be going through. Currently in last minute trip prep!
