Help to Ship in or out of South America

Help on shipping to South America

To all interested rider.

SamericaXplorer is helping to everybody on their plans to ship the bike across the Caribbean to many destinations in South America to those riders eager to land in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Chile among other Atlantic shores.
For many of you, shipping is a complicated matter , documentation, custom and shipping ordeals.
Recently I 've been reading that Central America day by day is getting a little more problematic to go from custom to custom along many countries including the $$ expenses of crossing from Panama and Colombia

These are the steps to follow for your new adventure and riding in S.A.

Ro-Ro (Roll off- Roll on or Crated bike)

Some maritime companies provide RoRo service for motorcycles, others doesn't . Crating is the way to do it. Crating in Miami runs from $270 to $320 approx. We can arrange that service in Miami, but other places you must get somebody to do it.

Necessary Documents

1. You must provide the original title with your name on it for custom validation and clearance. This is a charge that runs between $50 and $70. The title is returned to you after clearance at the port.

2. We book on the selected trip for you and our forwarder will prepare all the necessary documentation. This cost is $100 plus the title validation cost as said above. A 'Dock Receipt' document to be give to you to deliver the bike at the port. If you cannot deliver the crated bike, we can do it for you at a convenient charge.

3. You get insurance or no insurance at all. It is 1.5 percent of the bike value. It could be RISK LOSS or ALL RISK . The first is around $45 and the second $90 (based on $6000 value). Do your calculation.
The forwarder provide the certificate of insurance.

4. Three (3) days before the sail date (cut off date) you must take the cargo to the port . Custom do request 72 hours the bike be at the port for validation and clearance. Documents required at this point, Dock Receipt and a copy of title.

5. We do the booking, logistic, coordination of documentation and always on top of everything until you leave the country. (this is an A plus service). If you need a recommendation I can give you one.

6. Fly to your destination and be there at the time of the ship arrival. Contact the shipping company day in advance and get the Bill of Lading for your motorcycle. Because you are in a tourist condition you must do this process. The Bill of Lading will be telex-released by the shipping company, document necessary to release the bike., along with your passport and yourself .

Destinations (Maritime shipping)

Houston or Miami to Cartagena : $450 maritime rate til March 2011
(5-7 days transit)
To Ecuador : $600 (10 days transit)
Peru & Chile : Around $800 (15 days transit)

Others ports of service to S.A. are NY-NJ, Baltimore. MD, Norfolk .VA
Houston , Jacksonville, Miami. Rates could be higher from up states

of the East Coast.

Air cargo : Run around $1200 from Miami to Colombia and above (just

cargo). You must probably save on crating.

Give me a call or send me a PM with any question you may have.

Out of Cartagena, Colombia and other destinations

Today, we are doing the logistic to ship a couple from Cartagena out to Houston or Miami. Things are not to simple as in the US

1. No maritime shipping company do LCL (consolidated cargo , by piece) out of Colombia. There is a forwarder co. doing this , way to do it in most of Latin American countries.
2. I have an agent who is representing me in Cartagena and to be in charge of doing the documentation. I get the maritime rates through the forwarders to double check the shipping cost.
3. You must crate the bike, the agent will help to get one.
4. Papers needed, copy of the passport and permit entry for the bike.

You need around a 5 days to stay in Cartagena because one day is for custom and the other day for law enforcement /drug check of the bike. There is a cut off time to deliver the bike as usual.
We'll assist you at the US port.

Michael, you probably already know this but....lots of riders have used Sandra at Dakar Motos for shipping stuff. She'll give free advice or handle it for you--reliably and at reasonable cost. If you're in B.A., check them out.

Looking forward to hearing more about your trip. It sounds like there have been some changes recently. If the path home brings you through my neighborhood, be sure and give a shout.

best,

Mark

We actually are finishing our short holidays and coming back to work tomorrow.
Sorry but looks that the auto-response we left on our email doesn’t work as properly as we expected…
Regards
Javier & Sandra

I was starting to get paranoid :-) The phone wasn't answered and an SMS (via Skype) failed :-)

Let me know if I need to resend the email please.

Recommendation for Gaston/SAxplorer

If anyone is thinking of using Gaston's services to help you out with shipping in and out of South America/United States I can highly recommend him.

I recently flew the DR 650 by from Barranquilla, Colombia to Miami - not a common route for a tourist motorcycle, it proved to be fairly difficult and I speak some Spanish. Gaston was quick, thorough and reliable, working with several sea and air freight agents in Barranquilla and Cartagena to help me get to Miami as cheaply and as quickly as possible. He ferried me around Miami when I arrived and helped me pick up the crated bike.
Gaston also ships vehicles, quads and boats in and out of SAmerica/USA and knows the continents and the paperwork well.

He is a top bloke, an overlander helping out other overlanders.
