Buying Tires in Punta Arenas
Can someone can recommend a place to tires in Punta Arenas. I was told it might be cheaper than buying in Buenos Aires because it's a duty free zone

Tyres in Punta Arenas
Hi,
I have no experience of getting tyres in PA but a friend of ours who we travelled with last year had to get a new front for his KLR. I'm sure the details will be on his blog ... Flibber T Gibbet
Might be worth a look for you.

Tyre supplier - Punta Arenas
Hi Jay,

As far as I know nobody in town stocks them but they can get them quickly and cheaply.
If you walk down the hill away from Hostel Indepencia on the main road (Indepencia?) there's a moto shop just along one of the streets on your right (virtually at the junction).
Tyres take three days by airfreight (mine came from Conception. U$10) and cost either U$65 or 75 I can't remember. That was for a rear Pirelli MT60 (17")
There is a tyre place called SM Motos in Rio Gallegos but they are MUCH more expensive.

That was my experience in 2009.

The duty free zone (Zona Franca) is well out of town towards the port. There is a bike tyre place at the very end on the left but their selection is limited and not that cheap. Your best bet is Motoescar. He's opposite the cemetary (also well worth a visit).

Hey Adam,
Thanks for that good info. I was mainly shopping around to see if tires were cheaper than in BsAs as I still have a bit of meat left in my current MT60 to make it back to BsAs.

Yup, I went to the Zona Franca shop and he only had 1 Maxxis, a 50/50, no other selection.

Where did you end up getting the tires?
Im in Buenos Aires now with enough thread to get me to Ushuaia, but not back. I was planning on either buying tires here in BA then shipping down or buying them in Punta Arenas. The latter option seems to be a lot more affordable as the cheapest prices I found in BA are:

Pirelli MT 60

Front 90/90 - With Camara $ 480
Without Camara $ 520

Rear 130/80 - 17 - With Camara $ 760
Without Camara $ 790

Pirelli MT 90

Front 90/90 - With Camara $ 439
Without Camara $ 580

Rear 130/80 - 17 - With Camara $ 690
Without Camara $ 800


Prices in pesos Argentino. The place is called MOTO CHEC on Ave. Warnes 680, Phone number 4854.3204/4856.8737, I talked to CAMILO, you pay 20% or 30% deposit and pick them up next day.

You wouldnt happend to still have the contact info on those tire shops in Punta Arenas. Ideally I could call them in advance to order the tires so I wouldnt have to wait for them once I arrived. I did something similar in Peru.

You'd be better off buying in BA, if you can make it. Otherwise head for Rio Gallegos.

Cross posting this here since I looked for tires today in Punta Arenas.

Alejandro's shop (affiliated with Moto Aventura?). He has a lot of big bike tires in stock: Heidenau, Pirelli, Metzeler, Bridgestone, Continental. Highly recommend. Located at: -53.146648,-70.898112


Also there's 1-2 shops over in Zona Franca (Free trade zone) that has some moto tires. I didn't see any front tires but did see some rear tires in 150/70/17. I recall seeing Mitas and Maxxis brands. Located at: -53.135405,-70.87306

Having bought tyres and batteries in BA and Iquiqui, provided you use DolarBlue Pesos in BA, it was cheaper than in Iquiqui

+1 for Alejandro. Good stock and good bloke too (speaks English), as is his old man who also works there.

If you can make the 3500km from BA to PA on your old tires, that's worth a few quid - more miles on your new tires whrn you eventually fit them

Big bike tires are rare in the zona franca. I found MotoAventura to be very over priced. MotoEscar's sign was up at Carrera 666, but never much sign of life there. I found Pirelli's at a good price with excellent service at:

Mitas in puntas Arenas
Has anyone dealt with Pneumatico San Jorge in the Zona Franca in Punta Arenas?

I have enough thread to make it to Puntas Arenas but now enough to make it back out.

I would like to order tires in Puntas Arenas and pick them up when I a down there.

Just checking for experience with this place before calling them and making an order.
