Buying a bike in Brazil as a foreigner

Hi guys,

I'd like to fly to Brazil, buy a motorbike and then travel up to America on it. Would this be possible considering I don't have a house in Brazil? Would I still be able to file all the relevant papers and if so, how long would that take? Is it a complicated process?

Thanks

I have been searching this site for information on this subject, and from what I have discovered, Brazil is an expensive country to buy a bike and it is quite difficult if not impossible for a foreign traveler to buy a bike.

After reading several accounts, it appears that Chile is a much easier if not the easiest South American country for a foreigner to buy a bike to ride north to the U.S. It is legal and the step by step process is detailed in several posts.

Just use the search box at the upper right of this page and find the articles and decide for yourself if that would fit in with your plans.

Kindest regards,
John Downs

My mate Rupert bought a bike there in 2007. It was pretty straight forward if bought from a bike shop. I can't tell you the procedure though.

But yeah, bikes are VERY expensive. He paid £2000 for a 1989 XT600 Tenere in pretty poor shape. It's still going though.

I just rode down to Brazil from the US on my 2008 well-farkled Buell Ulysses.
I'm exploring selling it down here. US Titled and registered.
Let me know if you are interested to explore options.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
