Arrived in Santiago, need to buy a bike but which one! :D
Hello all,

I am Thomas, from the Netherlands and i just arrived in Santiago two weeks ago. I am here for a internship in Medicine, but after I have other internships in Cartagena, Colombia. I want to buy a bike here in Santiago which can bring me to Cartagena. A few years ago I drove from Holland to Dakar, Senegal on a transalp 600.

I only have a (very) small budget. I thought the bikes would be cheaper here, but they are actually really expensive I think.
I think I cannot spend a lot more then 1 milion pesos.
The thing is that i don't know a lot of the brands here. I know off course honda, suzuki etc. but they ask really a lot for them second hand.

I also don't really know if i have to buy a more like chopper model or more like a enduro. Can anyone give me some advice please? Maybe some people in Santiago who can help me a little bit?

Hi Thomas,

It would be worth contacting the HUBB community in Santiago (click 'Connect' along the top of the HUBB page) and put the word out.

There are good and bad bikes everywhere, so have an open mind, as a minimum try to find something that has been well serviced and looked after. Take a trip around some of the moto shops and get a feel for what might suit you, certainly for your budget you might find a well used 150-250 cc bike in good condition. A dirt bike will get you to more places more easily then a cruiser style bike, but only you know what YOU want to ride.

Hola Gipper,

Thank you very much for your reply. I had a warm welcome from the people of the community. I only found out that I will have a problem crossing the border to Peru... So that is a big problem.
I now trying to find out how to fix this problem, and I already found a bike I think. I will go for the cgl125. But first I have to know if I can leave the country on it.

What problem do you think you will encounter by crossing into Peru? So long as you have the paperwork in order and insurance, buying in Chile rarely results in problems.

I would personally go for an Enduro style of Moto but then you already say you have a lot of exp. with overland.

The Honda cgl125 will get you to mars and back but for a million peso I would also consider a Euromot 200.

They are Chinese bikes but people say apart from bits and bobs needing replacing, the engines are sound and fairly reliable.

That said, what you gain in power and off road ability with the Euromot, you will lose in terms of 100% reliability with the cgl. I know of a guy who took one to Texas from Santiago. They look really retro too

I was going to buy the same but in the end decided to take a loan And buy a Tornado 250xr. Now I have the cash can't decide whether to buy a Falcon 400nx instead

I would be interested to hear about your potential issues with the Peru border crossing as well. I'm planning on attempting that this year sometime.

Motos in Chile seems to keep their value pretty well and thus are more expensive. ridetheworld I just recently bought a Falcon NX4 and love it.

I just bought a new Tornado XR250 as a new NX4 was a bit pricy for me in the end. I'm going to get the plates done next week. Only covered 100k but loving the little beast so far! Really light and nimble, haven't pushed it at all yet so no idea how it feels at 110 but felt fine at 80. Going to the argentine boarder today to get a feel for it at altitude. Being the sole owner and having done the buying process legally I don't expect any issues crossing boarders, but if you have a problem you could always get to Peru via Bolivia?
