wildlife in Mauritania/Western Sahara

Hi,

I’m a wildlife biologist I am currently developing a database with observations of vertebrates from Western Africa.

I would like to ask if someone has observation of mammals, particularly large mammals (carnivores and antelopes), in the Western Sahara and/or Mauritania.

I would need the following information:
- Species;
- Date of observation (month and year);
- Country and coordinates of the observation (or alternatively the approximate location of the observation; e.g. 50 km north of Choum);
- Photo if available (can be in low resolution);
- General comments (road-kill, live, etc.)

You can send me the information directly to my e-mail (see profile).
I assume the commitment of sending a copy of any future publications on this subject to contributors.

Thank you very much for your cooperation,
José

Hey José!

Does dolphins count? If so, I can contribute with some info from Banc d'Arguin.
Also, this might be a stupid question, but what about semi-domestic roaming animals like camels?!

Thanks for your postings, always interesting to read...

Jan

Hi Jan,

Thanks for your e-mail but we are interested in terrestrial and wild mammals.

So dolphins and camels are out of our goals.

But thanks anyway !

José

Hi José
All I can offer re Mauritania, (Banc D'Arguin,)is this excerpt from my February '98 diary...
"As we drove on we saw several wily jackal feeding off seaside fare on the tideline. They would always be feeding singly, and would look up with amazement at our two diesel Land Rovers gunning through the soft sand before turning away and trotting off, their long foxy tails streaming out behind them. They would slip quietly out of sight over the ridge, where they would watch and wait for the unbroken desert silence to return".
