Hi Alex,

You can find ATMs in the larger towns and cities in Morocco. If coming through Cueta there is one as soon as you get into Fnideq a couple of kilometers from the border crossing. Don't know about the countries.

There is one is Mali...I can confirm...in a Hilton type hotel next to the big marche. If you find the Lebanese mission, it will be 1/4 mile from there.

In Mauritania, I heard there was one in Nouckt...but I can't confirm.

In Senegal there are some in Dakar and Thies...St Louis and Kaolackas well...but unsure about Tamba and Bakel, etc.

I'm not sure how to take this, considering that the preceding posts list various places where ATM's are found.

I'd add that there are ATM's in Ouagadougou and in major cities throughout Ghana. I don't remember about Guinea, Togo, Niger or Benin, and it's been a while since I was in Cote d'Ivoire. Once in the CFA zone things get more relaxed, since you don't need to fret at every border.

Hope that helps.

Mark

I agree with your comment Markharf.

Alex, from your previous posts, I remember you had already crossed the Sahara through Tunisia, Algeria into Niger, and you were about to enter Nigeria. I was expecting to hear that you have made it all the way south to Capetown. Are you now turning around - back north?

P.S.: From my own experience I can assure you that there are ATMs for VISA in Burkina, Mali, Morocco, Ghana, Nigeria even in smaller towns. I am not sure anymore about Mauritania, Togo, Benin, but quite certainly you will succeed in the capital cities. Really difficult were Niger and Liberia, but even there you will get cash pay-outs on VISA cards in commercial banks.

ATM in Bamako - go into the Sofitel Hotel de l'Amitie.
As you enter the lobby, first right up the stairs and right at the end of the corridor after the hotel shops.
Another at the Bank of Mali near the Sofitel is here N12.63537 W7.99543
Banks will let you take money out with a VISA card.
International hotels will also sell you currency (seldom at a good rate)
In NCK the hotel Halima can ( if they wish to) exchange your cash
As long as you know the rates- there is always a money-changer somehwere- Just be careful- clever tricks brigade and all that- I counted 10 notes but must have been distracted as when paying for the visa in the embassy found I really only had ...9 (Grrrrrrrrrrrr !)

ATM Locators

Visa and Mastercard have ATM locators on their respective sites. I tried a few North African cities and found ATMs in some and not in others. You could compile a list ahead of travelling or you could try your luck using the locators in internet cafes as you go along.

I can confirm that there are ATMs in all four countries listed which can be used with foreign cards.

The ATM in Nouakchott has been working since March 08, although it was only for Visa.

Markharf also mentioned Togo - there is definately an ATM in Lome, although from memory they only took Mastercard.

There should be a Visa ATM at the BNP in Nouakchott just round the corner from the Auberge Menata. When I was there in Nov 2007 it had been installed but wasn't yet working. Even allowing for Mauri inefficiency it should be up and running by now....Insha'Allah.

Have used my visa card in several ATM's in Ghana: Accra has several ATM's, as does Tamale and Wa in the north.

Burkina Faso: has plenty ATM's in Ouagadougou - however using a mastercard can be difficult. There should also be an ATM in Po - and if there is one there, then they should also be in several other towns around Burkina.
