Venice to Alexandria

Hi

We're leaving in a few weeks to drive from the UK to South Africa, through North and East Africa. We had been planning to enter Egypt from Jordan, however, given the recent developments in Syria are now planning to take the ferry from Venice to Alexandria.

I was just wondering if anyone had done this, if so, any top tips and what can we expect in terms of customs on arrival in Alexandria - I've read a lot about other border crossings into Egypt, so am anticipating significant levels of bureaucracy! Will we be able to get our Egyptian plates here too?

Any thoughts / experiences would be helpful.

Thanks!

We did it last year

Immigration happened on board and took an hour or so after docking.
Then the fun starts! Lots of paperwork but all very easy, bike inspected, number plates issued, registration card issued etc. You need Egyptian pounds but we changed Euro with a customs offficial at the bank rate. A couple of stops for prayers and we popped out into Alexandria at about 8.30 pm The next move is to break rule number 1 about riding at night in Africa!
Patience is a virtue but all the officials were really nice and helpful.
Hurry hurry and then wait is the mode they like you to operate in. It was great fun and we enjoyed the whole experience. All part of travel.
