Security in Egypt and Sudan

How safe is it to drive the Sahara in Egypt and Sudan? Are there safe camping spots along the way?
Is there any need to have a guide/security guard when travelling with kids?

Hi there. The countries are two separate experiences. As you can imagine, Egypt sees plenty of tourists and overlanders and therefore in general there is much more established infrastructure, whether it be some facilities for camping, parking your 4X4, or inexpensive hotels. The exact extent of facilities is dependant on which route you are planning to take. What is your initial plan?

Sudan, is a bit unique as there is a once a week ferry so the road from Wadi Halfa to Dongola doesn't see a lot of traffic. You will be wild camping for this portion. We felt extremely safe in this region and were welcomed warmly. I would guess that your children will be a pleasant surprise for the locals and be met with smiles and curiosity. Others who have traveled with children can comment on their experiences but the ones I know mentioned this. I don't know of anyone who felt the need to travel with a guard of any sort. In egypt there are some area's that are considered dangerous, but they won't let you go to them except in an escorted convoy (usually at night and very fast). Seeing how the national economy revolves around tourism, they just will not let you get into trouble. Sudan is super safe and friendly on the route you will probably take. A highlight of the trip to be sure.

I have been to eight countries in sub Saharan Africa but never to Sudan or Egypt, since I´m going with my blonde haired blue eyed kids, the unknown stresses me a bit.
According to your answers I don´t need be stressed, I´m now looking forward to visiting these countries

we travelled (self-drove) through large parts of Egypt with our blond girls (ages 5 & 8) with no problems whatsoever - the Egyptians we met seemed to love kids. Driving in Egypt can be a hassle because of checkpoints (and some crazy driving habits), but we never felt in danger. Do remember, though, that kids dehydrate more quickly than adults, so keep stocked up on bottled water and encourage the kids to drink regularly.
