Rims for TLC

Well, bought a FJ60 1-1½ weeks ago now and compared to the L/R Series III it's obviously a more comfortable vehicle, hehe... =) I'm also buying a wrecked 1989 HJ62 and I'm fitting the front & rear manual difflocks from that, the rear doors (got a tailgate now), and might also put that diesel in eventually... The F3 petrol engine is very nice though, lots of HP & torque - but not very fuel efficient, hehe, is it... ;^)

Anyway, I got a question; I'm not very satisfied with the rims, they are, what I belive is standard, built with that locking ring thingie, and my tire guy complained about the problems getting them in balance (due to the rings)... I fitted my Michelin X 4x4 and they used over 100g / rim to balance the wheels... =( What should I buy in steel rims for a 60-series? Are the other light truck Toyota wheels as tough? I'd prefer 16" steel wheels.

Tnx in advance

Hi joham,
The split rims you are refering to were standard in Africa and Australia as they make tyre changingc (sort of) easier - as it happens I just threw mine in the dump yesterday - they are heavy and anyway, I've turned to tubeless tyres (using those cheapo Brazilian 8 spoke mangel rims). Balancing in my experience is not so critical on a 60 - it still steers like a horse on a skateboard...
Plain steel Hilux rims which come in 16 may be a bit on the narrow side (5.5 inches) but will do the job with normal 750 16s. Or just dig up some normal 60 series rims, they were the norm in Europe.

see you

Chris

Well, actually thought of Hilux rims, they should do the job I guess... I'm running on 7.50r16 now anyway so 5.5" width works fine even though the tires are kind'a narrow, the vehicle looks like a bicycle carriage from behind, hehe... =)
