Poland - to Gambia on two Varaderos

Hi to you all,

We are starting our great adventure on 19th June, we are planing to go from Poland, through whole Europe to Africa and there Maroco, Western Sahara, Mauretania, Senegal and in to Gambia. We are planing to take main roads and stick to the ocean coast.
Any tips from you, experienced bikers will be welcome, where to stay, what to look for, etc. Especially how safe it is overe there, as I ahve heared a lot of bad stories.

Fell free to visit our webpage, unfortunetly only in polish, at Projekt Gambia 2010

To HU, you will have a great trip, the only thing I would say is avoid the Rosso border crossing! use Diamma instead, use the Horizons search facility for Rosso, much has been said about it, the security aspect seems to change all the time, its best to read what the experienced riders have to say and not what people have heard from a 'mate' that heard it from someone else down the pub! Chris Bright and Chris Scott are very knowledgeable about Africa, and if you want info about Morocco then Tim Cullis is your man.

Have a look in the knowledgebase in my signature for info on Morocco which I always describe as 'safe, exciting and inexpensive'.

You'll need to get visas for Mauritania either before you set off, or from the Mauri embassy in Rabat.

As Dave Ede says above, avoid Rosso. My blog to Senegal is at There and Back Again

If you go into the Gambia there is a good campsite called camping Sukuta http://www.campingsukuta.com/index.html

If you are looking for a friendly face and any possible help ask one of the locals where Bintou Fabouye lives, she used to work at the campsite and in the past she helped an overlander I know when he an occurrence of Malaria, I visited her in 2006 upon his recommendation to give her some money on his behalf, I also gave her painkillers and a few packs of 'wetwipes' that I had surplus, on the wall of her house in the family compound she had a photo of him and his bike and now possibly photos of myself and her that I sent to her, I believe she is from Senegal and if so, she is the only Senegalese person that never tried to 'rip me off' on the trip.!!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events (22 this year!); we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
