Niger - safety - military convoys

When crossing the border from Tamanrasset to Arlit last July, we were wondering if cars in Niger still had to use the twice a week military convoys. We had lot of different answers to the question, till we asked the chief of police of Tahoua. He stated that the convoys have been stopped in August 2000 and that driving independently is safe now.

We met an american woman in Niamey though, who, together with a group of Austrians and Americans, got robbed at gunpoint in the Air last February. I'm in email contact with her, and asked if she could post her first-hand experience on this website. Hopefully she will.
