Morocco Insurance.

Hi,

Does anyone have any information about buying bike insurance for Morocco...or have recent experience?

I am travelling from Almeria to Nador (on a sunday) 12 day trip. Can you buy insurance anywhere? Are any places open on Sunday? Will i get away with it until i find somewhere on a weekday?
Or does anyone know of a UK company that will provide a Moroccan Green Card? I have tried most suggestions and had no luck so far!!

Fairly sure you can buy it at the port on entry ... whatever day of the week!

Can you buy insurance anywhere?
Only biggish towns - look for assurance but not all of these bureaux do the assurance frontiere you need.

Are any places open on Sunday?

IME, yes.

Or does anyone know of a UK company ...
I dont even bother looking anymore and just buy at the border or where I find it. It's the same price.

Last time I was at Beni Enzar (port of Nador) in Nov no insurance booth in the port but at the port gate turn right - west (ATMs on the right I think - or in Nador for sure) and short distance up before the Melilla roundabout on the right is an AXA? Assurance - blue. Havent used it but noticed it last time.

(Who would like to do a similar GE map for Tangier? I've always blundered out of there. Ceuta is easy enough.)

Going south there may not be one for a while - Midelt?, Er Rachidia for sure.

I've posted on Insurance at Nador and you should be able to find the posting.

I travelled over in Oct 2007 and arrived on Sunday AM. There are (were) two huts supposedly selling insurance and neither was open. One had a mobile number on a bit of paper which I called only for it to be answered by someone who helpfully told me the office was closed as it was Sunday!

I was allowed in despite no insurance and spent the night in Taorirt (it was a terrible crossing and after 50Km I needed a sleep!). I was told that the insurance office in Taorirt didn't do insurance for foreign vehicles As Chris says assurance frontieres) and was directed to Guercif where I picked it up for rather less than the advertised price at Nador. If you search The Hubb you should find my post which gives the name of the Insurance office in Guercif and it's address. The guy there was very helpful and a good bloke. If you can't find it, send me a pm and I'll dig out my old paperwork and let you know.

In November 2008 we completely forgot about insurance at the border, but picked it up later that day in Tetouan.

It was a rush as the offices were due to close and would be closed all weekend.

The insurance company hq seems to be in Casablanca, so they may have a branch in Nador as well.

Hey Phin,
I am following that tread, seems that this must be a UK insurance only problem. I just returned from Marokko and as a German I carry the Green Insurance Card of my insurer and thats it.
So, I cannot imagine that there are no insurers in the UK that won't cover, what the sister companies in Germany (or Italy) will cover. Try Allianz, HUK Coburg, AXA, HDI and other major insurers. Because you will definately need it "just for the case". If not I can give you the UK contact of a Rallye Service teams, we just had plenty of UK riders on the Rallye. They will know.

You are right Ras, nothing to worry about in Europe. It's the same story in the UK for car recovery ins. Easy/cheap to get on continent (well, DE, Switz and NL for sure), difficult in UK.

Got back from Morocco this weekend - it was not possible to get insurance at the border (Ceuta), and we eventually got some from an office in Rabat.
Had a chat with the guy in the office and he said that insurance was now no longer available from the borders, and that it was only obtainable from Wafa Assurance offices (they are in most towns). Not sure if he was being 100% honest with that, but I did try another assurance office previously and they redirected me straight away to a Wafa office.
Seemed quite steep though - £90 for the now minimum 1 month period for a Land Rover.

Been reading this post, and found it very weird not to get any insurance for a car/bike in your home country.
I am from Belgium and I have a green card for the Land Rover. Is from a company that links to Fortis BNP Paribas, so big enough.

What I do NOT seem to get is extra insurance in case something goes horribly wrong; to get me, co driver and car out the country and back to Belgium.

Is there a solution to it plz? If yes, who and what costs it?

It's the same story in the UK for car recovery ins. Easy/cheap to get on continent (well, DE, Switz and NL for sure), difficult in UK.

Maybe hard in BE too then. This is why Mk can be a holiday for some and an adventure for others!

hi,

i have completed my Turkey-Morocco-Turkey trip 3 weeks before. i did not buy insurance in morocco and no one asked me for it. i had a ticket because of speeding (was only 81km/k) in marakesh and even the police did not ask me the insurance. if i go again, i wouldn't worry about the insurance.

Feel free to use the maps below. From the port follow signs for 'Autoroute' or 'Rabat' to get to the N1 which is the major four-lane highway out of the city which in turn leads to the A1 autoroute.

I got a green card for Morocco from my Insurance company (LV) for my Landcruiser fully comp cover as well, it cost around £1 per day.

So we should all be Swedish...I get travel insurance free with the home insurance (30 days limit).

And I get the green card for free online from my car insurance company.

I get further travel protection when I pay for travel tickets with VISA.

My BMW insurance (NIG), as good value as it is, would not cover me for Morocco so I decided to pick it up on the way. Entered at Melilla so went through into Morocco and looked for the AXA office Chris Scott suggested by the first roundabout at Beni Enzar. They don't do it but sent us 200m further down the same road to the Beni Enzar Port. Turn left into Port Maritime (not straight on into the commercial port as we first did). Just to the right next to the Police Office are 2 cabins. Both sell Assurance Frontiers. They were unoccupied but had phone numbers pasted on the doors. The first didn't answer but the second did. A really friendly guy materialized 30 minutes later and we did the paperwork. Paid 620 Dirhams (in Euros) for 10 days cover - expensive!
