Maroc by 4WD

We are planning a trip from Romania to Maroc with a Toyota Land Cruiser since beginning of october this year. We think that the best way for us is to to go by land to Genoa, Italy, and then by ferry to Tanger, Maroc. There is somebody who tried this before? Do I need a special permit for the car? As I know in Maroc we can enter with european green card! Please give detais if enyone has done this.

we'll start our trip from Warsaw in coming 10 days or sth. like this. We'll go through Europe on wheels upto Algeciras and then take a ferry to Tanger or Ceuta. Ferry from Genowa is probably expencive and the trip lasts long. Moreover you miss Spain which is worth of visiting.

Hi Guys,
I think Piotr is doing the right thing. The boat from Algeciras is very quick and not expensive. All car import paperwork is done at the border and a green card is fine for insurance, as long as it lists Marocco as a country it covers (its on the back i think).
I've never heard of anyone getting a boat from Genowa before.

Thank you for your replies! I thought that via Genoa is more interesting because I already visited Spain by car and my main goal is to reach Maroc and stay there as long as I can. Sam, do you kown which are the costs for temporary import paperwork for the car?

You do not have to pay anything for a temp import or visa. Only thing you need to worry about is vehicle insurance, but as you have a green card that is not a problem for you. If you visit the Moroc goverment website you can actually fill in a print the paperwork prior to going, then you just hand over the copies to be stamped.

How long does that ferry take? and how much does it cost?

by comparison Algeciras - Ceuta is around 30 minutes and costs 260 Euros for 2 people and a 4x4 (October 08) It may be quicker/cheaper to go this way than the Genoa ferry?

It is possible to take a much cheaper ferry from Algeciras but it's not so fast. I was told that by my friend who visited Morocco many times. I will check it soon )

If your Green Card cover Moroccco is ok, otherwise you can buy insurance in Tanger. Last year the cost of insurance for a motorcycle was 80 Euro and 90 euro for a car.

trip from Genova to Tunis takes 23 hours, as I remember, so to Tanger 48 hours at least I think.

If you want to skip Spain, another option could be embarking in Sete (france) and take the ferrie to Nador or Tanger.
Nador is in the east of Marocco, perfect for a quick run south, or if you want to make a round trip, think starting in Nador and leaving in Tanger (or the other way round).
A nice side effect when taking a long ferrietrip, especially if it's your holliday trip and you have a stressfull job, you don't have to drive! You can do nothing but relax for two/three days and arrive completly relaxed and ready for the next adventure! Serious I really like driving, but going down europe in a fast pace is tiresome, so after arriving in morocco you will welcome some days of rest, why not combine them? And as soon you are on the boat you will experience africa, the whole ship has the atmosphere of Morrocco (including the food, chaos and smells).

Hi,
Griffdowg, the price for the one way ticket from Algeciras to Tanger was 93 euro one week ago. It was for LR + two adults + 6 years old boy. Nobody's asked for car dimentions or charging for kid.
