transit through Kaliningrad possible?

Hi there,

I'am a total beginner in traveling on motorbike. For next year I'am thinking about going from Lithuania on the coastline (Curonian Spit) down to Poland. I have no experience in going into Russia, even taking my motorbike into any non European Union Country. Is there any possibility to get transit visa for view days staying, nowadays? Or who can I ask?

Happy to get any information. Thanks.

It's a part of Russia, and therefore Russian entry rules apply. Whatever you'd need for, say, St. Petersburg is what you'll need for Kalingrad.

FWIW, I didn't think the Spit was all that special. Nice enough, if you're not heading anyplace nicer.

Hope that's helpful.

I've been to Kalingrad, although not on a bike. Frankly, unless you have some particular reason to go there (you just love Immanuel Kant?), I don't think a visit would be worth the bureaucratic hassles and time spent waiting at borders.

The Baltic countries have some other rather nice spots, I'd spend your time heading to those (Riga and Jurmala come to mind, but I'm sure there are many others).

I agree with Motoreiter. Kalinnigrad is not a window of Russia. It is quite boring and has no real 'feel' of Russia, as I know it.

However the border procedures were by far the fastest I have ever had for both entering and departing Russia. 20 minutes entering (from Lithuania on Curonian Spit) and 25 minutes exiting (to Poland south of Bagrationovsk) on a moto. My entry would have been quicker but for a group of day cyclists!

With the paperwork hassles (Visa, Insurance, money changing) I would give it a miss. But petrol is about £0.60/litre!

+1 for Jurmala.
Charming, fairly lively, old style, seaside resort just outside Riga.
