Is it possible to get a 250cc bike in to Vietnam?

I'm trying to plan a bike trip across Asia and hopefully Europe. Vietnam is a major interest of mine and really want to drive through there, but they won't let in bikes bigger than 175cc officially. Has anybody have any advice on the chances of getting a honda xr250 in? or possibly a xr450? They are street-trail so they may not look as imposing to a Vietnamese border guard... Any advice would be very much appreicated.
Thanks,
Tim

I met a german guy in Laos this year who had done it on a 250... he had put 175 stickers on the bike a while ago and he had dummied up a registration document. He said they didnt ask for his carnet and saying that they didnt ask for mine in thailand, cambodia, laos or malaysia either. I would suspect it is really just down to plain old luck and how much you wanna take the chance whether it would work for you on that particular day you arrive at the border.

But, best of luck.

Hi

Tried to get my R80GS in last year describing it as an 80cc. Well its says 80 on the side panel. Failed of course, but like may others I felt a certain 'obligation' to give it a go. Nothing to lose....

hi,

in 02/2001 me and Simon Milward crossed with 600cc bikes at the border near vinh, sorry dont remember the name of the border station, but it is in the mountains, I think the most northern border station with laos.

I did not like Vietnam, but go and find out yourself

good luck,

mika
