Campeche City

The remains of the old walls include the "Sea Gate" and the "Land Gate".The waterfront has a 3 km long walking, running, biking path along the sea shore.

Villahermosa and Tabasco

We had to start the long ride back to Morelia to see the Monarchs. From Campeche city it was 770 km over two days to Tuxtepec in the 34 degree heat.

We had one of our best on the road meals at the food stand at the Bodega Grocery store for 40 Pesos.

At a check point we also strangely came across a circus truck with two tigers in the back.

On the road there were also hundreds of pilgrims in groups of 3 to 10 all riding bikes towards Mexico City for the Celebration of the Guadaloupe on December 12.

Puebla

We decided to go the back way to Puebla.Well this was one of our most difficult days since the Dempster.

Puebla 3 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr

It took 9 1/2 hours to go 450 km. The first 4 hours were over curvy mountain roads thru small villages with hundreds of topes.

The last 180 km included 50 km of road that was almost all potholes, a long stretch thru an industrial zone with heavy truck traffic and a huge amount of oil on the road, and the rest at dusk in traffic with the uber aggressive Puebla drivers.

We were greeted at the hotel by a fellow Canadian traveller who directed us to a local Cuban bar where we enjoyed food, drink, and a local musician. Puebla has I think has the nicest Cathedral I have seen in Mexico as well as a very nice Zocalo or central square.

Morelia

We were really on a mission to get to the Monarchs now. The 450 km drive to Morelia still took over 6 hours on the toll road.

Morelia 1 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr

Leaving Puebla we did see some puffs of smoke from the volcano.

Morelia 7 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr

For the first time in weeks we actually saw other riders, but unfortunately on all 3 occasions they were on the other side of the toll road. We all did wave madly at each other of course.

Morelia is known as the pink city because of all the buildings made from pink marble. It also famous for the birth place of La Michoacana, a massive chain of ice cream shops started by 3 illiterate brothers.

We met for dinner with our BMW friends Diana and Fred from Mexico City as they were in town as part of their tour of the pueblos magico.

The city was really gearing up for the holidays. The Zocalo is all decorated with lights, a nativity, and a huge tree.

We were so excited to meet back up with our friends Garry and Ivonne. We had driven 1500 km back to go to see the Monarchs with them.

An added treat was to meet Garry's brother Cliff who had come to visit from Britain.

Sarallou,
I am sorry. I had planed a visit, and fotos of the lake etc, etc, but the holiday jitters got me and I packed up after a month of being in Antigua and now am through Honduras and into Nicaragua. Got my sights set on Costa Rica. I will be there, as best I can tell, for a while. ratbikemike

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
