Smile riding for softies in the GWN

Hi People, some advice please as to the earliest time of the year for a pensioner on a BMW, at the moment drinking cheap and wine and eating cheap steaks in Argentina, to contemplate northern Canada and Alaska. I have decided in my dotage that I am no longer a roughie toughie biker but one that has fallen in love with asphalt, or at the very least well maintained gravel, and now the thought of mud and snow on the road leaves me unimpressed. Ride safe.

Biking in Northern Canada

With a snowmobile, the route is in almost perfect shape right now!

The earliest time you can make it is a bit different from the best time to go. Sounds like you want to make it as enjoyable as possible so I would recommend July or August. The weather is as warm as it gets and in a somewhat normal year as dry as it gets. Camping is enjoyable at that time of year but as those two months are school summer holidays, there will be more travellers on the road. June also is a possibility as around the summer solstice (June 21/22) the days are incredibly long and if you are far enough north the midnight sun is quite an experience. May is certainly doable, but a bit hit and miss with the weather, can be nice, can be cold as stink.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
