Question Garmin 60CSx replacement with bigger screen?

Hi,

I have a 60CSx. I find the screen too small for my liking (and my ageing eyes...). I'm looking for a model with most of the features, but a bigger screen. I need:
  • Bike friendly
  • Waterproof
  • Extensive track logging (to memory card on the 60)
  • Significantly larger screen
  • Easy way to mark waypoints
The only one I found so far is the 620, a marine/car unit. The downside: price and it weighs 490g. The 276C might also work.

Any other suggestions?

Unfortunately there is no such thing like "60 with big screen".IMHO get (used) 276c and together with 6o cx you win.You may use 60 for backup, track log,if you walk somewhere...and 276 for map details.
Cheers

Peter
the 276C will not suit your purpose as it will fail in your requirement to save track logging to memory card.
I would suggest you look at the 278C
identical in looks/size to the 276c BUT:
- that one has an internal memory large enough to take all the EU Garmin maps, leaving the (sadly expensive and old style) bespoke garmin memory card free for additional maps- the largest of which you can have is 512MB
In comparaison to cheap 4GB micro sd cards, the garmin bespoke cards are obscenely more expensive- but you can't have it all!

It also has the ability (unlike the 276) to have Custom POI's

It can hold up to 50 routes, 15 tracks, 2000 waypoints,
I managed to get it to 'freeze' after uploading over 326,000 custom POI's !
I use the custom POI's as it leaves the internal POI memory free for use for routes and poi's taken on the move.

The amount of unit screen customizability is incredible and I have to see another unit that is so navigation orientated- It gives the user the ability to display what you need to know and have available rather that you adapting to what the unit shows you if you know what I mean.
Horses for courses of courses and this is just my own 2 pence

I use the 278C in the 4x4 and on the bike and the 60CSX as a back up and when on foot/camel/canoe etc!- A very winning combi IMHO.

Thanks for your advice, folks. Unfortunately, the 278 seems unavailable in our part of the world, even Garmin Oz doesn't know it. So I'm stuck with the little screen and the almost unusable power button for now. (The rubber on the button is now broken for the second time. This time I'll have to pay for it...)

@ Bertrand: did you get my email re Wanderlust?

Peter, out of curiosity, why not the Zumo 660?

Its only 57 grams heavier than the 60CSx (270 grams vs 213 grams), lighter than the 400 / 450 / 500 / 550 , does all of the above and has a screen 3 times the size with 4 times the resolution.

Its not cheap, but its on my shopping list.

The only thing I dont like about it is the screen shape, and thats hardly exclusive to this device. GARMIN: Its a GPS for fu@ks sake, not a TV ... I want the screen equidistant around my location. A square screen (or round screen) would be better ... I almost always have GPS on map view. Whats the point only being able to see half as far north or south as you can see east or west?

I agree with you completely there. Although the 60 screen is the same shape, by the time I add a couple of data fields it is square.

I have read in various places that it doesn't do track logging and that marking way points isn't straight forward. Apparently, in some Zumos there is a 'hidden' track log function, undocumented, that you need to activate.

I might grab the manual and have a read, although Garmin manuals are pretty light these days, too.

Thanks for your comments, keep them coming.
