Garmin 390LM?
I currently have a 550 that's definitely seen better days! I'm looking at the 390 to replace it; does anyone have any experience with them? It's not a main selling point for me, but are the tyre pressure features gimmicky, or do they actually work?

tyre pressure... gimmick IMHO- another gadget prepped to fail eventually- A old wise hand once suggested I checked my tyre pressures before setting off each morning whilst the engine warmed up and I've been doing that ever since.

It may be easier to make device suggestions if you could say what features are a 'must have' for you in any Garmin you may wish to consider.

Thanks. As you say, tyre stuff gimmicky! It looks like the valve caps are easy to nick anyway! As to what I'm after, basically I love the features on my 550, so similar I suppose. Through more dumb luck than clever management, I've managed to get my old 'navy to work again, so I might put off the expense for the future! Still no word from Garmin support - I'm sure it would be just generic 'help' anyway.

I like the lane assist idea - many's the time I've nearly got that wrong! POI that include Petrol is a must, campsites would be nice. I quite like the idea of the curvy road option on the 390 - could be interesting .

I'm exactly on the same thinking mode nowadays, though my 550 still has a long way to go. It does funny things sometimes though, but I cope with it, and it's paid for. I'll change when it dies on me, or take me to a place I definitely did not ask to go to…

Maybe one day I'll start looking for a GPS that can read weather forecast and take me around cloudy areas, till then long lives the 550 and my good old thrusty 60Csx, and paper maps. The price of those devices has become a real turn off. One can legitimately wonder what the added cost of those new features really bring to the core functions of an already functioning device.

POI's can be had separately or are built into map data
"campsites would be nice" - Same as POI's - for additional info, use a separate .csv / .gdb or .gpx etc- files

The curvy road option is, apparently, a feature (much like avoiding highways) where the unit selects said desirable route. Possibly another gimmick?

All the above file additions (.whatever) all seem a little Greek to me (no offence!). Perhaps I need to spend longer reading the instructions? I'd rather be riding, though!

Curvy road selection is specific for Grmin motobike devices (i.e. ZUMO) and will choose curvy roads by default if you choose for it in the settings. The device can do it, not all the maps are ready for it yet.

I like the tyre monitor, we have on on our Landrover, whilst on the coragations in the outback our right rear started dropping in pressure then the alarm went off. It gave us time to pull over before the rear shredded saving us £200 for a new one. 2 tyre plugs later and we were off.

It is the standard sentence they use explaining about memory capacity and has nothing to do with the lifetime of your device.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
