Mauritania visa at border
I am at ocean blue camp site South of Rabat. I missed the Mauritannia embassy viasa office 11am close by 1/2 hour due to puncture. Now in a dilemma. From what I have read I can now get a biometric via at the border for 50 Euros but other information (probably out of date) says no. It is currently Friday, do I wait here till Monday and go back to Rabat or move on tomorrow assuming all will be ok for visa at the border?

Recent reports say the border visa is now 120 euros...
Would cost more to stay three days in Rabat-

Here's a source about the recently up-scaled visa costs:

And from a French traveler at south-border Rosso:

Prix des visas:

Pour les Européens
120 Euro pour 1 mois (1 entrée)
150 Euro pour 3 mois
200 Euro pour 1 an (plusieurs entrées)

Pour les pays Arabes et Africains
80 Euro pour 1 mois..

There should not be any problem to get the visa at the border and it would seem logical that the embassy in Rabat also ask 120 euros now. In case you get visa in Rabat, I would like to see the price confirmed.

For anyone in two minds about whether or not to visit Mauriania, 120€ might be the deciding factor. It bears no relationship to the costs of issuing a visa and is nothing more than a tax on 'rich' visitors. So I can see why the French language articles are so critical of the decision.

If you bring the family, visas become a major expense. Visas are required by a tit for tat reasoning; we demand visa for their citizens so they do the same to us.

You are right, 480€ for a family of four is a heck of a charge if all you want to do is transit the country on the way to Senegal.

But it's not really tit for tat, that's what the French article was about. The visa into Morocco for RIM citizens is 7,000 um, against the equivalent of 29,000 um for Moroccans to visit RIM.

We're on our return leg of our trip to Gambia and back. We've passed through Mauritania twice. The first time, in February 2015, we got our visas in Rabat. They were about 30/40 euros .each However, on our return in April, we got them from the embassy in Gambia. They did cost a staggering 120 euros each for a one month single entry! They were not biometric. This is also the case on the Rosso (Senegal/Mauritanian border). When we told a Mauritanian auberge owner he phoned a contact who confirmed this was the new price at the border but that the price was cheaper in Rabat. There are biometric facilities at the Moroccan/Mauritanian border. If someone was contemplating a round trip it would be prudent to get a multiple entry visa from the embssy in Rabat. The new prices are prohibitively expensive.
