Egypt without a carnet possible or not?

This is a bit unclear from other posts. Has anyone done it. Car is a MB 209 diesel van, 1987.
Thanks. Manfred, in Hamburg.

I don't think so. They are pretty particular about paperwork in Egypt.

Three Spaniards on bikes got it right in November last year. They sat on the Lybia/Egypt border for three days but ended up getting a 1 week transit and managed to get out of Aswan without having to head back and forth to Cairo. I have no idea what they said or did, all I know is that they pitched up at the Egypt border having no idea that they even needed a carnet or what it was.

Elios was one of them: ÀFRICA... EL VIATGE

They actually got all the way down to Nairobi without a carnet from leaving Spain.

We met them at Rezeiky Camp and again at JJ's.
