EXC450 in Sahara - octane booster needed?
A bit late as we're off on Wed but does anyone have personal experience of whether EXC 450s run OK on Algerian (or Libyan) desert fuel? - usually 2 star. 640 Advs have run fine on my tours before - are 450s much higher comp ratio?
thanks Chris S |

You could try asking at the UK Rally Raid Yahoo group - quite few EXCs are used in rallies.
You can get the motor specs at www.ktm.com Cheers. |

Hello Chris, in March I will be in Tuneisa with my EXC 450!
I will plane BorjEl Khadra - ElBorma. After that I send you my experience with local fuel. In this place is normally smuggled fuel from Libya.... Last edited by beba; 5 Feb 2007 at 11:32. |

Chris
my reply is a bit late as well, you probably know the answer by now, however the KTM 450 exc's run fine on whatever grade of petrol the Moroccans use on the piste's out there. |

I just returned from Tunesi. I was in south area with my EXC 450.
I normaly used local fuel from barels. These fuel is smugled from Lybia.... I didnt have problem with, the fuel is very good quality. But on my KTM broke ignition and I must went to port on local car. |

Actually, fyi we found the two 450s ran fine on Algie 2 star (not so well on diesel for a short spell). One did get very hot tho, lost all it's water (no warning light!?) and died a few days later.

I believe Moto Aventures had similar problems with their 450s losing water on early tours in Moroc and there was a simple solution which was er.. I can't remember. If anyone was really interested I'm sure they could contact Jon for the solution through their website.

fitting a fan helps, but its a good idea to have a switch as they do hammer the battery. Mine bioled several times on a rally but stopping in time, waiting and then sticking some more fluid in and the bike never died- think the isotonic in the camel back may have helped..
