Looking forward for a Morocco trip with my lately bought LC4 Adventure (1999). Cause I'm new with motocross bikes (my Thunderbird Sport isn't the right choice for such a trip...) I had to sort out a lot of things about the bike and how to prepare it. Finaly I have one question left, about the air filter:

Most sites/postings advice you to seal the air filter, for good reasons. But how to do it exactly? I heard about a special gauze you should stick over all openings. Is this the "Luftfilterüberzug" KTM-Sommer (Germany) is selling? Others are talking about a protective cover (or something simillar). Where to get that part from? Does anybody have any experiences with LC4/sand/air filter?

There's the cover of the type sold by Sommer, there's filter skins which are a sock which go over the filter, or (my choice, and adequate in my experience) clean and oil the filter every day or every other day. It's always worth taking a spare foam in case the original is damaged. Don't forget if you fit the cover or filter skins you may have to change the carb jets to suit.

Thanks a lot for your advice Ian. Got another one from a very pleasant German guy in the meantime. Seems that there are two versions of covers, one is the sock you mentioned and the other is a foamed cover sold by Twinair which he prefered. Having a spare one with sounds very reasonable to me too.

I used a cover over the main air filter, and also a fine wire/gauze 'sandstop'. Basicially you have to cut out the air intake 'hood', use silicone sealant to stick the gauze down. Stops larger sand and grime.

I only cleaned my filter once a month, and the 'sandstop' a rub down every couple of weeks - with no apparant (!) problems.

On our Trans Africa trip we put a gauze voer the airbox opening. It caught a lot a gunk but blocked up quickly, starving the engine of air, and had to be cleaned regularly. Whilst cleaning it is an easy and quick job I don't think it stopped any dirt that the standard Dual Air filter would have caught anyway. In our opinion it was a bit of overkill and not really necessary.
