Starter "slips" then makes loud clanking and grinding noise, KLE
My KLE has started to act alittle strange lately when i start it in the morning. Engine turns over once or twice then it seems to "slips" and the engine stops everything. The starter motor still spins freely and I can hear, what sounds like, gears or pieces of metal slapping together. When the engine is warm, problem seldom appears. any ideas?

Hi,
Recently just fixed this problem on my own bike the starter clutch needed an overhaul. Better to do this now than wait around as you will just wear stuff out. I ordered the kit from wemoto (search for starter clutch repair kit in the KLE500 section), I think it was about £29 or so, you also will need a rotor puller (ebay £17.00). And either a new starter cover gasket or a tube of suitable sealant (probably another £5) . You may have trouble getting the bolt off the end of the rotor (also its reverse threaded!) if you do not have an windy-gun. Basically remove the alternator cover, remove the bolt holding the rotor in, use your rotor puller. Replace the bits on the rotor with the bits in the kit and slap it all back together! Regards, Andrew |
