the fact that it goes away after just a couple of seconds is an excellent sign. probably just the tappets ticking a little before the oil pressure builds up and gets everything sliding harmoniously. no problemo, just don't rev the pants off it.

ticking

Ohhhh dooom my friend cam chain, valves, warped head etc....

infact Ive had XR's for years and there fine, ticking is just the engine before oil starts to circulate as said above. if it chuffs out a bit of smoke don't worry either valve seals take years to become a problem. change the oil and filter, loosen and retighten the exhaust bolts, change the plug and make sure the cap is on correclty and I bet it's fine. if still fairly loud then check tappets and cam chain adjuster, once there done it has to be fine! I recall a maddening noise on my old transalp which in the end took 2 hours to fix at home whilst having a few s, it was the oil pump chain of all silly things, it would have been fine but i was scared of ticking myself- i now joined the RAC so don't bother till it blows up
