Accomodation - Heathrow

We're arriving at Heathrow late in the afternoon of Sunday 4 May '08.
Can anyone recommend a cheap overnight bed close to the airport?
We're catching a train to Felixstowe the following day to pick the bike up.

Why not try one of the central London youth hostels? The Heathrow area is barren and any accommodation tends to be very expensive. In London you will have the option of doing something in the evening, a greater range of venues for meals and will be closer to your departure station for Felixstowe (Liverpool Street??).

Agree. And Heathrow is on the metro link into London.

Yup, get yourself to London town to find a hotel.
Much better bet than Heathrow and you need to be there for Felixstowe connections anyway.

There is a Motor Lodge being built next to Uxbridge Underground/Metro statio that should be open by then. "Rooms from GBP26.00" the sign says.

This is 20 minutes by bus (about GBP1.20) from Heathrow but the Metro journey takes far longer and costs far more.

I am back in the area this weekend and will update you.

New plan - if we get in early enough (and not too stuffed) - we'll catch the train direct to Felixstowe and bunk down there for 2 night before picking the bike up.
That way, I can get a days surfing in . . .

Since you are arriving late in the afternoon get onto the subway and transfer to the victoria line and take it to the northeast end. (walthamstowe?) catch the #215 bus out to lee's camp site and throw up a tent for 7 lbs a spot. to catch the bus cross the street and go to # 6 or 9 stopsign. if you are going to wander around London for a few days get the bus/subway day card at the campsite. campsite has showers, rec room and small store where you can buy your stove gas, , etc.

You have a great sense of humour Mick and you are going to need it if you go into the north sea in May (or any month for that matter!).

Nor is Felixstowe reknown as the surfing hotspot of the UK!!
You could do some ship-spotting at the port.

Dave is quite right.....no offence to residents, but Felixstowe is not exactly on the recommended tourist trail !

Not sure where you head afterwards, but if you have a couple of days to kill - try getting off the train at Colchester - the Essex/Suffolk border area is quite attractive in May. Constable Country and all that..... Its directly on your route anyway. I might even be able to swap you a room for one in Oz one day

I think we all gotta have a sense of humor doing the things we do, otherwise we wouldn't do what we do.
I got a photo of me at age 6 swimming in the water off Penmaenmawr, North Wales (surf wasn't up that day). I was in Nepal last year and camped in -25C temps. Friends think I'm mad, but at least I can say I've been there and done it, and experienced every moment. That's what were all about . . .
