Glen Etive, Scotland - WTF????

Does anyone know what's happened to the once-wonderful little remote bolt-hole of central Glen Etive, south of Glencoe? I went up there a couple of weeks ago to find the roadhead at the lochside has been closed off, the road to the old ferryport widened with hideous red hardcore bricks, a massive (again, red hardcore) car park introduced where trees grew on the lochside once, and the old ferryport rebuilt with a new concrete pier
(and an incredibly arrogant film crew from daarf saarf (Essex boys all) setting up some metalwork - not linked to the horrendous ripping up of the lochside but they sure didnt help my mood!)

Anyone got any ideas? Seems the spread of the concrete, tarmac and neon cancers have reached even Etive...

I'm saddened to hear about this. It's a fabulous spot, and an old haunt of mine many years ago. It sounds like they're preparing to do boat trips for bussed in tourists.

I think they will - the old ferry to Taynuilt stopped in the 1960s - I think they are reviving it - which will mean widening the whole road all the way up to Glencoe. Horrible.

Turns out they have resumed serious logging in the glen and have widened the last section of the road to take logging trucks - the ferry jetty has been rebuilt for this as well. So no camping at the loch head and big trucks rumbling about

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
