From London, a European trip in April
Hello all,

My first post here, hopefully not too similar to others!

Recently married, my wife and I are trying to plan our first real motorcycle trip together - previously we have just camped in the UK.

We want to tour places in Europe that neither of us have seen in any detail, and would like any knowledge and help that you can give us.

SO, what are we looking for?
Both of us like camping and being in the 'wild' but we also like the odd hotel in the major city in which to relax and take in the sights, sounds and smells.
We are looking to spend roughly 2-3 weeks on the trip, heading to Italy as neither of us have been there, and perhaps taking in a bit of Belgium, France, Switzerland and perhaps Germany on the way. As said, we would like to spend some time in the major cities such as Brussles, Bern, Venice, Rome, Nice, but also love camping.

We aren't the type to set anything in stone but to have a general idea of where and when we want to be anywhere, and perhaps a few alternatives to that we can take ourselves wherever feel the urge.

So, any suggestions on routes, things to do and see, restaurants/hotels/experiences that we must/should not do whilst on our way?

If you're heading over as far as Venice, then consider continuing a bit further east to Slovenia - the Soca River valley and Vrsc Pass over to Kranske Gora and Lake Bled are wonderful.

Lots of places to see, depends on what you want to see !! Belgium and France have the WWI & WWII battlefields, if you're interested, Belgium has fantastic Trappist Beers, Holland has some lovely little towns and some interesting countryside, France has all of the above and some fantastic food and wine, Germany has the Romatic Highway and the Black Forest (where you can get a piece of Gateaux) and places like the Rhine and Moselle Valleys, the Czech Republic has beautiful cities and countryside as does Hungary Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia etc. Scandinavia has fantastic scenery (and prices). If you're going down to the alps, check out alpineroads.com, very useful. Go with an open mind and a smile and if you set out to enjoy yourself, well, you probably will.

all worth a look at if you fancy staying north-ish (may be a little chilly / damp in April)
but there's also plenty if you prefer a more southerly route -
Millau bridge is on my 'to do' list
And/or with a bit of clever timing you could catch WSB at Assen (25th April prov.) if that sort of thing floats your boat.

Belgium, France, Switzerland, Germany... would not be my first choices to wild camp in.

My rule of thumb is camping becomes more feasible the further east you go when wild camping. By easier, I mean less likely to be spotted & greater chances of coming across a suitable location. That's my experience, yours may vary, but Belgium France Switzerland Germany might be hard work with various laws and population density. Depends how stealthy you are!

One nice route would be france italy austria croatia serbia greece bulgaria roumania east.
