Germany - Gelände Verboten????

Is all roads except paved ones forbidden to ride in Germany.
How about an old kolonnenweg?

In theory, no. If it is a formed road/track and there is no sign saying no entry then you are free to drive/ride there. In practice there are now more road signs than tress in Germany (whence the Germans call it the sign post forest) and there will be few dirt tracks you can legally ride on. Also, even if you do find one you will come across more 'no entry' signs somewhere in the middle of nowhere, especially if you stumble across one of the many paved farm tracks. Some cops will make sport of chasing people down just to issue a ticket.

If you mean the old Kolonnenweg, I just googled it and it looks as some parts of it are used for hiking and cycling, meaning it's probably a no-go for anything with an engine.

Imho if you want to do any amount of going off the road, Germany is pretty much the last country you want to go to. On the other hand there seem to be some opportunities in eastern germany, at least a couple of companies organize guide tours there.

These two come to mind: Die Endurofunten 2010 and Mecklenburg Kreuz und Quer most of it is probably going to be gravel roads with the occasional stone quary or brown coal pit thrown in.

Well, the old kolonnenweg is on the former east side, some part of it is hiking, but the boarder was pretty wide with a maze of dirtroads on the east side.

In addition to plenty of signs, pretty much anything else is forbidden in Germany too For example forrest tracks that lead through a forrest are out of bounds even if there is no sign posted, same goes for privately owned property.

Much more fun to be had in pretty much any other country ... France/Italy (western alps, old military pistes), Belgium, and then of course Romania and former Yugoslavia.
