23 Days to Play With

This site is unbelievable.
Tons of information supplied about everything, including camping in Slovakia and Romania, & Europe in general for that matter.

I shall be leaving the UK via Dover & Dunkerque 29th June and generally heading east to Prague onto Opava before heading South East thru Slovakia Hungaria and into Romania. I’d like to spend a few days in Romania before leaving for Split on the Adriatic Coast via Serbia & Bosnia. Has anybody any pointers in the last two Countries?? Serbia & Bosnia.
Thanks to Martin Jeffes for info on Serbia. I shall ring Carole Nash to see if I’m covered.

I shall be camping when and where possible but as somebody mentioned they prefer a roof to canvass should the weather take a turn for the worse. Thanks to Steve in Denmark for the link to Hostels.
Can anybody tell me the currency in Romania please, I assume its Euros but I’m not certain. For that matter any of the mentioned countries.

I’ve heard the roads are a bit suspect in Romania, gravel etc. Any roads I should avoid on a Pan

Depending how much time I have I intend to make my way back to the UK via Slovenia, Austria as slow as possible. Spending whatever time I have left touring the Alps.

Romania still has its old currency, the Lei, valued at roughly 1 Euro = 4.25 Lei. In Romania you can use your bank card for atm transactions. Should you intend to use your credit card at the petrol stations, make sure you know your PIN.

Except for the major roads, most roads are in a more or less rotten condition, which isn't a big problem for a bike, but then the PAN doesn't exactly boast enduro qualities Just watch out for oncoming traffic, or when overtaking - drivers tend to swerve out of line to avoid huge potholes Still, it is one of my favourite countries in the eastern parts of Europe.

Thanks for that. I had read that they were using the New Lei where as I would have thought it should be the Euro.......However.
I shall keep an eye out for the potholes.

The serbia / bosnia to adriatic route, I would probably come across serbia and cut down through sarajevo then mostar and to the coast. The road from mostar to the coast is really nice and both places worth a stop.

The romanian roads were not too bad when I went. It's quite easy to stay on decent tarmac most of the time. There were some rough patches, but the main roads through brasov / sibiu etc. areas were not too bad at all. The only bad patch I struck was along the danube (we came down danube on romanian side from near belgrade). Half the road was perfect new tarmac, the other half they were still building, so it was very rough. Nothing you couldn't survive though! I'm sure they have progressed since last year too!

Banja Luka in bosnia meant to be very nice too. So that is another option if you want to come further west through serbia, i've not been that way though.

Thanks for that Graham, I had planned to call in at Sarajevo. But then travel down to the coast thru Jablanica taking in the Makljen Pass, Bugojno and down past lake Busko Jazero. I know its the longer way round , but just fancied the mountain route.
I would like to follow the coast road thru Split, Zadar and head back into the hills at Senj passing Ljubljana on the West side to Lake Bled.
Thanks for the positive feed back about Romania, guess I'll find out soon enough.

I see that you intend to visit Lake Bled, good call, it's one of my favourite places in Europe. The best campsite in the area is Camping Bled at the opposite end of the lake to the town of Bled. The site is on the lakeside and has all the facilities you need (shop, restaurant, etc.) but in common with the Bled area can get very busy during main season. If you like a quieter life could I suggest you go an extra 10 miles or so to Lake Bohinj, which isn't so crowded at that time of year but is equally as beautiful as Bled in its own way.

If you are interested in pyramids, you may want to visit Bosnia's pyramid valley while in the area:

BOSNIAN PYRAMID - Visocica Hill, which is 2,300 feet high, is actually Europe's first pyramid in heart of Bosnia

I'm headed roughly that way from mid July (route out via Czech Republic, Poland, etc), and with the promise of some pretty major announcements about the site (carbon dating of some timber found in tunnels that had been below sea level sometime after tunnel construction came up with a 34,000 year dating) due the end of August, I wouldn't mind diverting to take a look.
