I've posted on the which bike section that I'll be travelling from Sydney - London in Jan '09 and was trying to decide between keeping my Pegaso or getting a BMW 650 Dakar. Looks like the consensus is that the Pegaso will do the job, so I'm going to stick with it....which I'm happy about!

The question is, what would you do to kit it out? I'm going to worry about tyres closer to the time, but clearly need some that are a little less road focussed.

Other than that, I'm guessing stiffer shocks and a bash plate are going to be essential. Anything else I really need? I want to have the essentials but don't want to spend any more than I have to...

Also, anyone have any idea who would make aluminium panniers for the Pegaso?

i have read almost all of your posts about your travel and i also think that pegaso will handle this journey. rotax is a good engine. just take care the chain tension after you load the bike. i had problems because of that.

about alu panniers... you can buy a set of alu panniers from touratech and get one of this racks:
Pegaso 650

or build a homemade rack.

try to buy from German touratech web site as is is cheaper then the UK site.

For panniers, take a read of the threads that discuss, at greaaaaat length, the relative merits of the various brands of aluminium panniers.
There is a very wide range, but I don't know what is marketed in Oz.

If you struggle to find hard panniers you could go with soft. Some people swear that soft panniers are better than boxes, anyway. (Again something that has been discussed at great legth on this site!) In Australia you make what are arguably the best on the market: Andy Strapz.

Ted Simon ditched his hard panniers in Oz in favour of Andy Strapz: from memory of the book, this was in the early days of marketing the AS product.
TS never looked back after that, so to speak!!
