it gets worse..major engine probs R1100GS

One of the things I love about life is the discovery of interesting new challenges and fun things to do with your spare time.
Take my recently acquired 1995 R1100 GS with apprx 48000 miles on the clock. A couple of weeks ago I'd have told you that all was well apart from a bit of excessive fuel consumption & reluctant starting, which I was intending to look into when I'd the time.
Then today, I changed the engine oil for the first time ..... aaaargh..... lumps of metal in the oil and a rapid transition from reasonably cheery to completely suicidal in the space of a few minutes.

There were three or four biggish chunks of metal which look kind of like the outer race of a circular or semicircular bearing, and numerous small flakes. Clearly an engine rebuild is imminent. Any ideas from all you experts out there of the likely source of the failed bearing, if such it is? Crankshaft bearing perhaps?
Thanks for your help, I'm off for a pint of cyanide.
Cheers for now,
C.

Thumbs down

I'd contact the previous owner of the bike and give his piece sheet back to him and ask your money back.

Looks like the bike's been running with insufficent oil or no oil at all.

No comeback if it was a private sale?

Cheapest & easiest option is to buy a second hand engine from Sherlocks, Motorworks or MotoBins & keep the blown motor for spares.

A full rebuild will cost a fortune, especially if you have to pay someone else to do the work. In addition, what else will you find that needs replacing when you look closer?
