Where to camp without paying. . . .

There is a book that is available in most large bookshops here in Australia that will show you all the free overnight rest areas and camping places. It will also list if the rest area has water, toilets, showers, picnic tables etc.
The catch is that the book costs about $30.
It is called Camps Australia Wide. We use it all the time, as do lots of others. . . you will often have company. They have a web site www.campsaustraliawide.com but I havent looked at it to see if it is helpful or not.
You will soon get your purchase price back if you use the book.
