My husband and I are trying to get into Egypt from Eastern Europe. When we started our journey there was a ferry from Turkey into Egypt but as the day got closer and the troubles in Cairo picked up, the ferry stopped running. I thought I would post our plans thus far for other travelers who might be in the same situation.

The price is 400€ per motorcycle and 300€ p/p plus an agency fee of 400 shekels when you arrive at the port. The boat now leaves every Saturday, they will get details from you before you book, but nothing is final until the day you leave. The cabins are decent and they cook plenty of food for you while your there.

When you arrive in Haifa be prepared for a long day. We spent nearly 7 hours there due to extensive security, spread out buildings and an error on one of the documents.

Once off the bat with your motorcycle we went through security where they looked through everything on the bikes. Then we had to leave our motorcycles behind with Moses at the bonded warehouse and walk out of the port to go buy insurance (looking back it might be easier to organize insurance ahead of time). Then we had to come back into the port and find customs (which is near the police station, north of the bridge). After customs we had to find billing which is on the second floor of a glass like building close to the bridge. After all of that we then walked back to Moses and the retrieved the motorcycles. We did have some slowdowns for the day, but essentially that is what it should be like.

286 shekels for port fees which was paid at billing after customs.

We tried to cross into Egypt last Friday via Eilat-Taba without a carnet (we heard you could get a temporary importation permit at the border, but not here it turns out). They told us to take a ferry from Aqaba to Nuweiba and buy it there. After further research it seems the way to go though there is not much info on the matter.

We will keep you posted and if anyone has current information on the matter we would love to here (email is probably best)! And for anyone curious we are traveling on an American passport and an Irish passport and US registered bikes.

And even though it sounds like a big hassle and expensive, we have been in Israel for nearly three weeks, and they have been the best three weeks of the trip so far.

Hello, I would like to update our info thus far.

We were able to leave Israel today via the northern border with Jordan. And despite the rumors that have been going around about motorcycles not being allowed into Jordan, this was the easiest crossing we've ever done.

We paid...
100 Israeli shekels each for leaving
20 JD each for Jordan visas
27 JD each for insurance
20 JD each for customs

Our plan now is to head south to Aqaba where we will take a ferry into Nuweiba where we were told we can enter and buy a carnet on the spot for less than the CAA. This is all hearsay so I will keep you posted

Hi Beth, we are planning to do the trip up (from South Africa to Europe) starting in May. Egypt and the whole getting-in-there-and-getting-out-there, and crossing from Israel to Europe, was also a big part of our planning concerns. Thanks so much for the updates, looking forward to it. Drive safe!

How did you guys go? Did you get the ferry from Jordan and how much did it cost in total?

We are in the same situation. Planing the route from Germany down to Cape Town.
Did you travel any further than Egypt? Would the Israeli stamps in your passport not cause any difficulties in Sudan?

Any news on ferry transportation to Egypt is highly welcome
