Buying obligtory insurance in Bogota, Colombia

Ok, the simple bit is buying it, the hard part was finding someone who would sell it. You can buy it at some gas/petrol stations, but only a standard type for a whole year.

After much time spent on the phone, mainly the helpful receptionist at the Hostal (Cranky Croc), not me, the following company came up the best:

We got 1 month for each bike for 30,000 pesos (15USD)

Seguros Del Estadio

CR11 #90-20
(they shut at 1645)

.:: Seguros del Estado S.A. - Seguros de Vida del Estado S.A. ::.

To get the insurance you need the customs temporary import permit (2 sheets) which you can't get until Girag have given you the correct paper work. You can walk from the airport terminal to Girag.

You also need your vehicle ownership document.

Girag is straight out the door, and drift right then cross the roundabout (circle), about 5-10 mins.
The customs building is another 5 mins walk from Girag.
The sign does not say Aduana, but DIAN. You want the 3rd floor, walk to the right from the lift and there is a room full of people at desk with no signs of what each desk does. Go and ask someone for the desk that does the temporary imports or you will be around there for a long time.

If you ride the bike and get stopped without insurance they can impound it. This was confirmed by the ministry of transport.

But we took the chance and rode to the hostal before getting the insurance.

This was only a 10,000 peso taxi ride from the hostal (5 USD).

Entering from Venezuela in Paraguachon (the road Maracaibo-Maicao), you can buy a 3 months SOAT policy at the border, in an office just to the right of the DIAN

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
