Nouadhibou - Nouakchott safety

Hi all,

I'm planning an overland trip, starting to finalize plans. I see that the UK has a "no travel" advisory for Nouadhibou - Nouakchott, in fact for almost all of Mauritania. Other coutries have warnings, but not as bad. Does anybody know how safe this road is?

This stretch would be normal on road travel during the day (I've read about land mines, etc).

Any information would be appreciated!

There was one kidnapping incident once, a couple years ago. NGO driving at night.
Drive in daylight and you will be ok anywhere the gendarmes let you go.
Bring lots of 'fiches', there are checkpoints everywhere.

We passed safely through Mauritania last week with no problems at all. There are about ten check points on the road to Nouakchott and a couple south of there. I used about twenty fisches through Western Sahara and Mauritania.
All the check points were very friendly and at no time did we feel threatened, but then I suppose you don't until something happens. Just be aware of what is going on around you and don't let anyone know your plans unless they need to know.

Do be aware that the one "Service Station" about halfway along the route often has no petrol/essence! I had a can....but needed the generosity of a French motor home user to sub me a few more litres to make Nouakchott!

There may be cheap fuel on that side of the border but it all depends on how much you can carry. I had the same issue a couple of years ago.

I agree with Edmac.

Distance from the Morocco border to the Total station is 210km (without going to Nouadhibou). And then a further 230km to Nouakchott.

Like was said, and specially on a bike, depends on how much you can carry.
