Amazing new Rock Art site found in Egypt.

For prehistoric rock art enthusiasts: Pictures of the amazing new rock art site discovered May 2002 by Zarzora expeditions have been posted on their site. The site is located in the Gilf Kebir area south west of Egypt and contains more rock art that the whole Gilf area combined. Anybody want to tag along to take some pictures?

You mention tagging along on a trip - can I enquire further.

I'm aware of Zazora's trips and Andras Zboray's trips down to Uweinat and Gilf Kibir - I've enquired about both but have yet to organise myself to clear the time to go with either of them. However, are there others who are arranging trips which people like me might be able to join - I might as well look at all the options?

Any info appreciated - Simon

There’s also Sahara Pioneer SaharaPioneer.com managed by Raed Baddar. He operatesall over Egypt rather than specialize in the Gilf area but I think he’s planning a couple of Gilf expedition next season. I wouldn’t bother going with any other than those three. Everybody else is ether unprofessional, unenvironmental friendly or simply don’t have enough experience. I’ve been out personally with Zarazora and Sahara Pioneer and they are the best. I’ve also had an extensive talk with Andras when he visited Egypt last time and he seems to know his business and genuinely cares about the area.

Just to add a word, if one is due. Andras Zboray organises trips under the banner http://www.fjexpeditions.com
I travelled with him to the Gilf in November 02 and enjoyed one of the best managed, expertly planned desert trips I have enjoyed in a lifetime of solo desert travel. During this trip we also climbed Mt Uweinat, (with moderate difficulty), and discovered many important new rock art sites.

The demands of this trip are awesome, with no room for errors. Zboray has been there, done it, and will share his encyclopaedic knowledge with the generosity of a true desert enthusiast.

Check out his website, and then check out mine if you want an unsolicited report.
Bon Voyage

Hello
I agree with kitmax that andras trips are recommended as he is a real explorer and he planes the trip iternary in a special way.
I forget (sorry) the superb book of Sahara overland is a must and contains a chapter about Egypt.
For others doing the trip there is samir lama who is the grandmaster of this area with more than 40 years of experience.

Zarzora Expedition placed two marble plaques in memory of late Samir Lama, the renowned desert expert who died in February 2004 while planning for one last trip to his beloved Egyptian Sahara. The first memorial was placed at Sugar-loaf hill, almost halfway between Dakhla and Abu Ballas. The second was placed on top of the Gilf Kebir Plateau, on a terrace overlooking Wadi Sura "Swimmers' Cave", some 40 kilometers to the southwest of the so-called Lama-Monod Pass.

for pictures, go www.zarzora.com and check the gallery.

May his soul rest in peace, for the desert shall remember him...forever.
