Santiago, Chile

I response to my query for a BMW mechanic in Santiago, I got the following replies:

His name is Ruben Contreras, garage phone is 56-2-2229926, and cell phone is (09) 93301408 if you call from home phone, or 93301408 if you call from another cell phone.
The gps location of the garage is S33 27 11.2 W70 38 30.7
The garage is not very "ellegant", but Ruben is very good mechanic, and very good person.
I recommend you

Contact Josie Meyer, cell phone 56 9 9 826 0374. He has his own shop and knows a ton about BMW's.

A good alternative to Williamson Balfour, (the official BMW dealer in
Santiago) is José Meyer.
Stocks parts and a good mechanic.

Also for suspension specialist try M-Tec (they are official Öhlins dealer in Chile) - no matter what maker or type of suspension you have a problem with - they can help! They do well over 50 motorcycle shocks alone per year (while they do racing car and truck shocks) and have gained excellent knowledgebase for suspension over the years - i.e. I got my rear shock specifically re-valved and re-springed for a stiffer and more reliable use with all the load I do hard roads with.

They also do high-quality aluminium welding and machine high quality bits on the spot if you have any special needs.

I definitely can recommend Jose Meyer (and Rafael). When had a big crash 1000 miles south of Santiago, Rafael rebuilt my front wheel and got me imported from Germany all the parts I needed fro my F650GS (i.e teh whole fornt end of the bike!) . While BMW Balfour sent me packing !

Rafael speaks v. good english too.

Cheers,

Good mechanic: Santiago, Chile

If you need a good mechanic in Santiago ask for this shop:

Johnny moto: The name of the owner is Ruben. He is a very knowledgeble mechanic and works on the big bikes that are often used by long distance travellers. Ruben is also a very good person, and can point you in the right direction if you have any travel related questions in Chile.

I am presently on a trip around south america, and had to do some maintenance on my bike ( 2003 KTM 640 adv ) before hitting the carratera austral.

Here are the details:Shop: Johnny moto
Owner : Ruben
Direction: 8975 Americo Vespucio near barrio La Florida
Metro: Line 4A estacion: Santa Julia
Phone: 26 27 036
Cell: 933 014 08

Don' t hesitate to contact him.

I'd just like to confirm the correct address for Johnny Motos (Ruben), is the Florida address. He moved here about a year ago. I can also attest that this guy does great work.

Another recommendation for Johnny Motos

We can also recommend Reuben at Johnny Motos.

We found that the Florida, Santiago address (Americo Vespucio #8975) was correct. However the gps coordinates took us to the wrong location. (Maybe a case of different formats for coordinates?)

The GPS coordinates that worked with our Garmin 60CSX were:

S 33 32.170
W070 36.549

Cheers
Mark

. . by way of an update

. . we have just had 2 F650gs fully serviced by Ruben at the location given in another thread,

Americo Vespucio #8975

NOTE: JOSE MEYER NO LONGER SERVICES MOTORBIKES

A seriously trustworthy guy with many contacts in the adv scene. While we were there, a constant flow of metal heads passing through for a coffee / chat, Super Teneres, Vstrom, 1200gs, motorcross you name it, he will and can work on it.

We left him a list of things needing doing (from valve check, fork oil change, coolant change, oil change, brakes and battery etc), agreed a date for collection and shared emails on the progress of the works and his final cost. Far cheaper than being ripped off at BMW in the city centre.

Look out for the big black gate, its on the corner of Huascar & Vespucio Americo. Its quite discreet with no signage, just give the black gate a good knock and mention HU, he has a lot of HU members drop in. He is a 2km walk from the metro so you can hop on and off it to get back to where you are staying. He is happy for you to hang around and watch or if you want to see a bit of Santiago he will film all of the works which you can watch when you return.

I will post this on a similar thread on the subject.

I have been there a few days ago.
Very handy and nice guy. Has a lot of big bikes around, knows a lot about them.
Has all the computer-readout stuff to help those people out who can afford new BMW's ;-)
Just knock on the metal sliding door when you arrive at nr 8975; no name is mentioned on the door/building.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
