Jordan - Syria accomodation?
Following the LP guide accomodation in both these countries isn't very well spread around.

I would apreciate any adresses with positive experiences or areas were people had a good place to make camp for the night.

Any experiences / advice welcome.

Hotel Valentine in Petra. I've stayed there a couple of times, including last year when I bumped into other bikers heading North. Quiet and pretty secure parking. Great terrace for cold s and sunset views of the wadi, good buffet, very welcoming guests, pretty cheap ( but you can always sleep on the roof if you want even cheaper ).

On the back road from Crac des Chevaliers to Hamas there are numerous tracks up into the hills which made for excellent camping spots.

Trying to remember the name of the place in Hamas, Syria. Let you know if it comes to me.

IMHO, LP in general and LP middle east in particular is complete and utter sh*te. about the only useful thing LP guides are used for is to put under the sidestand of your bike when parking where it's a bit soft under the stand.

there's lot of accomodation available everywhere in syria and jordan. i much prefer guides published by footprint.

I traveled in 2001 by motorbike through the Middle East, including Syria and Jordan. I used the LP Middle East and find that one very satisfactory. There are always people who complain. Let them make a better guide.

In Hama (syria) is hotel Rhiad, right in the centre near the clocktower. It is very good, damned cheap and they offer a lot of trips in the surroundings. In Palmyra you can find a lot of accomodation, just ask around and make your choice. In Deir ez Zor is a nice midclass hotel, near the canal. Unfortunatley I forgot the name but if you follow the canal you can't miss it At the northern side of the Eufrates is a motel which is good too. In Damascus the French Tower hotel is reasonable good; for adress see the LP.

In Amman: the Al Jawaher hotel, mentioned in the LP too, is very nice and has parking facilities. In Aqaba: Crystal Palace, not very cheap but close too the beach, aircondioned and I was allowed to park my bike inside the hotel.

Generally to find good accomodation in the ME is no problem.

Hotel Farah in downtown Amman is cheap and biker friendly. There is a quiet garden outside with shade and a useful car park next door where you can work on your bike. There are numerous cheap bakeries, groceries and restaurants nearby and it's a 10 minute walk from the Roman Ampitheatre. Highly recommended.

Just travelled through Syria Jordan etc and must agree with Chris that the Lonely Planet guides were out of date, incorrect and inaccurate. My German friends I believe had guides by Reiss, I think this is the spelling and were far more accurate and useful.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
