Green card available at Greece/ Turkey border? - Horizons Unlimited

Hello,does anyone know if Green card Insurance is avaýlable at the Greece/Turkey border? I am currently in Turkey heading to Greece,any info(price ,validity ,exclusýons etc ) about getting the Green Card?

In most of the European countries - it should be available in the border. It's Europe afterall.

You possibly get the green card from insurance companies from Turkey too.

Doesn't Turkey have a green card too for foreign cars/motorcycles??? Right now i'm looking on my last summer's green card i travelled with in Europe - there's Turkey and Iran both included=green card valid, should be.

I got mine in 1988 from the AA office in Izmir. It was quite cheap. I recommend trying that first, as policies bought at borders tend to be expensive and not valid for a long time.

Inside the EU getting insurance is difficult, but compulsory. I had this problem a year later...

Thanks for the replýes, when I crossed from Iran into Turkey,they dýd not asked for the Green Card. Got booked by the Traffic Polýce in Turkey for speeding ,the cops didn't asked to see my green card either.

Max,

Don't try riding in Europe without insurance. If the Turkish cops had thought to ask for your GK you may have had to continue on foot!

The GK was just about the only paper the Greeks wanted to see when I disembarked in Chios.

I had occasion to show my GK to the cops in Turkey, too: somebody tried to do a U-turn in front of me last year. He failed...

Which way are you heading to Greece?

Hello Peter,

Thanks for the warning,Guess I have been lucky.
My route in Greece would be south to Athens then up to Igomenýsta to catch a ferry to Brindýsý Italy.
Is the offer to park in your garage still available?
Something cropped up at home,I would really have to go home and return to ride Europe in Spring.
If there is garage space available ,what is your address and will it be a problem to get budget air tickets to Singapore there?
My other option will be parking it at the Turkey Airport customs.

Hi all. I'm planning a trip around europe, leaving london 1st may 2004 for 6mths. I only have a vauge understaning of the green card, and any info would be apreciated. In most insurance quotes for a new ktm950 I'm going to buy, 6 weeks free green card has been mentioned. I'm guessing I should get this for a year?? if I can? can green cards be bought at borders?

The green card is a document that shows you have third party insurance for your vehicle. It is recognised (and usually required) by most European and several mediterranean and mid-eastern countries.

If you are buying and registering your bike in Europe insurance is obligatory and youir insurance co. should provide you with a green card. The modalities vary from country to country. Choose your insurer carefully. A few gotchas:

Exactly which countries are covered varies from co. to co. Check BEFORE signing up! Getting coverage for additional countries is expen$ive! (I paid 150% of the annual premium to get 3 months for Turkey. My wife's insurer includes all countries except Iraq automatically.)

From what I have read in other posts it is cheaper, and possibly easier to obtain insurance at the German AA, the ADAC.

With inner EU borders having disappeared it is getting more difficult getting green cards for foreign registered vehicles. Once leaving the EU theoretically a country requiring the GC should have them available at the border. In practice they may not ask for it and you ride without insurance, if you don't have one.
