Dainese Bluetooth Helmets

My wife and I have had a pretty expensive and unsuccessful experience in the past at trying out various attempts at rider pillion and bike to bike comms. We've paid a small fortune for an expensive autocom system which failed after we'd had it for a year on the the first day of our annual holiday. We've tried various cheaper systems which have all failed within a few weeks as connections in the harness get stressed by the wind. Even when they work it's such a phaff plugging in the ptt button and the power supply and the radio every time we got on or off the bike
Our recent trip took us through the Pyrenees and Andorra. For those that don't know Andorra has about 3 million bike shops, all duty free as far as the EU are concerned and one of the shops we visited was selling Dainese helmets with built in blue tooth communications. They're really meant for rider pillion comms but also can link to a mobile phone with blue tooth connection. The range is advertised as being 10 meters, which is a bit short for rider to rider. We took a chance and bought a couple.
They are fantastic!
None of this plugging in business. They are fully self contained. All you have to do is charge them up and a charge lasts for about 12 hours.
The microphone and speakers are top quality with a high clarity of sound even at speed. To be honest over 60mph and with open face helmets riding noisy Harley's it gets a bit difficult.
There's no messing about fitting the kits to helmets and trying to position the speakers where they don't hurt your ears. Everything is already built in.
Although they are only supposed to work up to 10 metres apart we've been nearly an estimated 100 meters apart and still been able to talk. When you get too far away you get a beep in the helmet and they disconnect but as soon as you're back in range a single press of the control button and the helmets reconnect.
Using the blue tooth phone facility you can always call each other on the mobile if you're too far apart and urgently need to confer.
They are available as openface helmets for 150eur and also full face but I can't remember the price.
I find the helmet as comfortable if not more so than the Nolan it has replaced.
So far - highly recommended, if you want to be in touch with your riding partner or significant other.
Are they UK/BSI compliant - no idea - who gives a stuff?

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
