So, Mexico City customs... nowhere near as bad as feared, just not a well trodden path.

You need the following documents with copies;

- Passport
- Visa
- Stamp page in passport
- Driving license
- Bike V5
- Insurance (for Mexico, you can only get 3rd party)
- Airway bill (two bills, first from Motofreight, 2nd stamped by Talma Cargo which you get later).
- Temporary Import Permit (from Banjercito bank headquarters on Military Road in town - ask for a Mexican/Canadian woman called Patricia in the office, very helpful and English speaking as they don’t do the process often) $57 + bike age specific deposit for refund on exit, $200 for us. Take bank cards not cash.

To get the bike you need to go direct to the Talma Cargo entrance of the airport with all paperwork and speak to the authority. You don’t need an external customs broker as the bike is in the drivers name and not a commercial/permanent import. We tried to use one, but this was false advice and cost of days of unnecessary problems.

Once you know the bike has arrived you need to speak to Talma directly and pay the admin import fees. Ana Sofia spoke good English in that office but gave incorrect advice re. Brokers (see below) $90 fees.

Best point of contact at the airport is Humberto Chavez +52 55 1320 9961, English speaking customs agent who works within the airport cargo area. He arranged a meeting for us with the authorities. It took a whole day but were essentially good.

The bike owner should then be allowed into customs to ‘release’ the bike.

Alfonzo, the Talma warehouse manager/director, spoke English and facilitated releasing the bike and moving our bike to their second warehouse in their truck just outside the customs gate, as it cannot be ridden out. Insist on speaking to him if you have problems in the warehouse. We pushed him on the large fees the warehouse tried to charge us and he them halved to $142.

Took us a while but once we worked it out the process was smooth.

While in the city waiting for a bike we stayed with Jorge, a really cool air b’n’b in a local neighborhood with a secure courtyard that was idea for receiving the bike and last minute fiddles.
