How many times can I extent my carnet in Australia?

Hi all I am going to be entering Australia in the the next week or two from East Timor. I already have a new carnet it started this morning so I have another 11.5 months left basically when I get there. I want to stay in Oz for more then one year (my visa is sorted it is just the bike I wonder about). So can I get another new carnet when this one expires and keep it there for another 6 months... so 18 months in Total?

Thanks George

Hey George,

We just extended our Carnet once, and the lovely people at this end (and they seem truly lovely) told us we can actually do it twice.

Drop me an email (you can find the email address from our website) and I will give you the names, phone nrs, email address and physical address of all the people you need to contact.

Paul from RAC also needs to be involved, but you are best of ringing him at the time.

He is, of course, another truly helpful man (I think the very nice men work for the opposition!), but you have to ring him rather than email.

Hi Ollie
Thanks for that reply, just to confirm that you will have your bike/car in Australia for more than 12 months just by extending the carnet, and that it is easy to do.
If so thanks for your quick reply it helps me out a lot!
George

We arrived with out car 8 months through a carnet - and it ran out here. It cost us $100 to get it renewed, which was very painless. They do have to confirm with whoever dished out your carnet, so make sure you have their contact details, although the girls here were aware of Paul at RAC.

Once renewed, you have twelve months, where apparently you can renew again, but this will be your final chance - so I am told. The other thing to note that if you export you vehicle via DVLA in UK (which I was advised to do) then you are not legal in NSW (as you need to have that for insurance). I posted another post explaining this in full ....

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
