Thumbs up Crossing China 2014: Nepal - Tibet - Kyrgyzstan

Hello,
we are planing a self-driving trip from Nepal to Kyrgyzstan starting end of April to middle of May 2014.
We are traveling with an Unimog U1300-Campingcar since May 2013 from Germany to Russia, Mongolia, China, Tibet, Nepal, India and Pakistan.
Because of the security situation in Pakistan it is not possible to cross from Quetta to Taftan (Pakistan - Iran boarder)
We got an offer from tibetreisen.com (info@wei-tu.com) for a trip from Zhangmu to Kashgar – Tourgar. It will take 13 days for about 3200km. We have one Day in Zhangmu and another Day in Shigatse for Paperwork. If you think about a sightseeingday it is about 100US$ more per day. But this has to be requested by the Tourcompany. So we can extend our trip.
So if you are interested, please let us know! Time for declaration of Chinese-Paperwork will take time!

regards
Eva and Stefan --> stefan_so (AT)web . de

When are you planning to leave?

It may be a little early for me also but I've been looking at skipping Pakistan too.

Is your intention to drive up from India to Nepal?

Tim

Stefan,

I'm still in Belgium and we would only leave mid june to go direction of Iran.
I am looking to go back to Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan (went last year on motorbike, now I want to do it on a 4WD) so for me it had been good to do Iran-PK-KKH-KYG.
But I'm encountering the same concern/problem that forces you to reroute, as the Iran-PK border is now a problem...
So even if we can make it accross, it would be around september I think to do the KKH or Nepal/KYG, which is already 3 to 4 months later than your plans...

Hey mogmog,

what type of paper work is needed and how far in advance would it be required for the crossing. Your timing may work perfectly for myself as well. I would be travelling by motorcycle.

Motorcycle Entrance To China

Did you guys get into China over land?

I'm trying to ship a motorcycle via sea freight to Shanghai and am told that they will not except used motorcycle for permit. Did you use a Carnet and were the vehicles temporarily imported? What was involved?

Thanks,

Used (second hand) motorcycles are not allowed to be legally imported into Mainland China for some years, actually goes for all motor vehicles ~ not only motorbikes. Never mind for re-sale or by the owner for overland travel, only temporary motorcycle import as a pre-approved tour group with detailed schedule / route (incl. China guide) and that is quite expensive and troublesome (a few HUBB threads talk about motorbiking in the Middle Kingdom).
