Real trouble

If this is true, and I'm afraid this guy knows where he's talking about, there's gonna be real trouble traveling to Mauritania. Just like Senegal Mauritania is going to close its borders for cars older than five years. Although it's not hundred percent shure, the rumour that it will going to happen exists for almost three years.

Yahoo Groups are members only. I'm a member but don't read Dutch well.

Perhaps you could log on to Yahoo, copy the story and post it here so everyone can read it and comment. Links do not have much response, specially to a closed site.

Everybody in Mori that I spoke to were quite open about the fact that most of the new cars there were nicked from Europe. 2,000 - 4,000 euros would get you a very modern Merc or similiar. If there is any truth in it maybe it's vaguely connected to that.

At least in Mori paperwork is mostly seen as a extra annoyance in life and so best dealt with quickly if at all, so there may be some hope in that the 10 euros charged at the border will actually be a bribe for something rather than just handing over money for nothing ;-)

Hmm, Marius if it continues/is true it's (again) some disturbing news.
Although I presume if you have a carnet its, same as Senegal, no problem.

For the people who don't want to subscribe:

De part mes sources officielles et pour votre information :

La Mauritanie a fait passer aussi une loi qui interdit comme au
Sénégal l'entrée des véhicules de plus de cinq ans. Pas de mouvement
ni d'application actuellement, le décret n'est sûrement pas encore
sorti donc pas encore appliqué. Prenez néanmoins cette information
dans vos réserves si vous descendez prochainement, l'application étant
souvent par surprise ici…….

Salutations amicales

Philippus
Président de l'association France-Mauritanie

I'll try to get some more info on this.
Meanwhile just wait and see....

There are also more discussions about this:

No entry for vehicles... Does this only refer to cars or to motorbikes too?
