One of the things I really want to provide here is a breakdown of how much this trip cost us, and where the money went. So often people seem reluctant to state this, and yet it is one of the most common questions of would be travelers. Obviously these prices are only valid for the time we were there, and everyone's trip will be different, but hopefully it'll give an indication or act as a guide.

Austria - Innsbruck (camping) - 24.50 euro (£20.82)
Switzerland - Hotel Restaurant Blume - 140 swiss Francs (£84)

I won't bore you with the details of when we filled up, but to summarise:
- we travelled 5,250km (3,262 miles)
- we used 320.92 litres (70.59 gallons) of fuel
- this cost us £357.84
- the most expensive fuel was £1.35/litre in the Netherlands
- the cheapest fuel was 97p/litre in Austria and Luxembourg
- the average was £1.10/litre
Please note the quality (RON) of the fuel used was different depending on what was available. We tried to stay away from using 98RON fuel, so as to keep the cost down. Almost everywhere we used 95RON. In some countries there was 87RON fuel available, and this would have reduced our cost (but also potentially the life of the bike!)
- 16.36 km/litre
- 46.21 mpg (miles per UK gallon)
- cash = £800
- credit card - £1106
- total spent = £1906
- Petrol = £357
- Accommodation = £438
- Other = £1111
'Other' includes food, souvenirs, emergency clothes purchases, bike repair!, etc.
We used Stena for the ferry between Harwich and Hook of Holland. We used Tesco clubcard points to pay for this, so we consider this as free. Included in our 'free' ticket was transport for the bike and a two berth cabin. Both ferries we used travelled overnight, so we didn't lose any traveling time or have to pay for other accommodation.
Our veteran travellers share their tips (and great stories) for staying healthy, happy and secure on your motorcycle adventure.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events (22 this year!); we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, the HUBB or to receive the e-zine. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
