Training for Travel

It's time to regain your riding legs - maybe you've been brushing up on your skills, or maybe it's long past time you did? Got a new Adventure bike, and finding it a little intimidating? Your first experience on gravel was terrifying, or disastrous?

Get an extra confidence boost by taking the critical off-road and slow speed skills training at the CanWest event!

Sign up for training! Training takes place each day on the event grounds. Openings are limited to maintain a good student-to-instructor ratio. This ensures a better training experience for all! Registration closes when we're full.

PRE-Registration is strongly recommended. There MAY be spaces available on the day, there may not! We MAY add additional classes if there is enough interest, so if a class is marked as full, please let us know you want in, and we'll put you on a wait list.

All classes run if there are at least 5 students. If not enough students, we may move you to another slot or cancel the class.

All classes:

SUITABLE RIDING GEAR IS REQUIRED FOR PARTICIPATION. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE RIDER TO SELECT A HELMET AND APPAREL THAT WILL PROVIDE APPROPRIATE PROTECTION. RIDERS MUST RELY ON THEIR OWN JUDGMENT IN THE SELECTION OF HELMETS AND APPAREL FOR PROTECTION AND DURABILITY. INSTRUCTORS MAY REFUSE YOU AT THEIR DISCRETION.

Note:

The focus for all training is on Slow-Speed maneuvers. Key fundamentals for newer off-road adventure riders and excellent tips for more experienced riders, especially those coming from an all street background. Slow speed maneuvers are THE KEY to successful off-road riding.

Pacific Riding School

Level 1 Adventure Rider Training, (A full day course split into Part A and B):

As an owner of an adventure motorcycle, you understand the need to change the way you ride on the pavement versus the dirt. Adventure motorcycles are large and for many road riders that can be intimidating in the tight confines of dirt roads. The teaser will showcase some of the necessary skills and exercises to take full advantage of what your motorcycle was design to do.

Regardless of your off-road experience, Pacific Adventure School (a division of Pacfic Rider School) courses provides you with a new perspective to riding off-road, and help make adventure motorcycling your passion!

Level 1A – Little or zero gravel experience

  • Motorcycle set up (quick overview)
  • Seating / standing form
  • Clutch Control
  • Footpeg steering
  • Counter-balance

Level 1B – Some gravel experience

  • Motorcycle setup and riding form (quick overview)
  • Peg weighting,
  • rear wheel steering
  • Rear/Front/Both wheel braking
  • Compression zone

Pre-requisites:

  • Insured on/off-road (adventure) motorcycle. All brands of motorcycles are welcome!
  • DOT enduro tires (30% off / 70% on road minimum, 50% off / 50% on road recommended)
  • Enduro or cross over dirt style boots
  • Appropriate body armoured riding pants, jacket, gloves and minimum DOT full face helmet (off-road helmet recommended)
  • Class 6 motorcycle licence
  • Minimum 3 years or 10,000 km riding experience on- or off-road
  • Crash guards recommended (not required)

You don’t need to take Part A to take Part B, IF you have some gravel road experience and feel ready for a step up.

Join the Volunteer Crew

From welcoming travellers at the gate, to taking care of the campsite and making sure all the presentations run smoothly, the success of every HU event relies on the enthusiasm of its volunteer crew. Volunteering only involves a few hours of your time. It's a great way to make new friends, get more involved with Horizons Unlimited and have loads of fun!

If you have a current first-aid qualification, or if you're a Doctor, Nurse or Paramedic, would you mind being on call for two or three 4-hour shifts to deal with any (minor) medical emergencies? Please join the Volunteers crew.

We send out an event Presenters schedule approximately two weeks before the event to the volunteers along with a Volunteer schedule. You see the schedule before everyone else does! You can then feed back any changes you need so you get to the seminars you want to see - we don't want you to miss anything!

T-shirts

Sorry, t-shirt ordering is now closed as we have placed the order with the manufacturer. A FEW Extra T-shirts will be available from the HU Store at the event. Next year be sure to register in advance to get YOUR choice!

Customise your Event Pass

Let people know what you ride, where you've been, and where you WANT to go! A GREAT conversation starter on your name badge!

What is the make and model of your motorcycle, bicycle or expedition vehicle? *

What areas have you visited so far in your travels?*

Name one part of the world you would most like to explore? *

This is a conversation-starter. Usually where you want to go, or can be technical expertise, whatever you like.

Read and accept our Terms and Conditions

I have read and agree to the Horizons Unlimited terms and conditions for entry to the event
and I understand that I will be required to sign a written waiver at the event before I can participate.
