At the risk of making myself even more technically useless than I might otherwise be, I'd be particularly interested if these sessions included actually getting the wheel on and off the bike, as well as the tyre part! My bike has all sorts of exciting cables that daunt me with the thought of having to remove / replace; in fact, the tyre changing part seems the easiest bit!

Needless to say I've not yet done it - I'm sure it would be easy having repeated it a few times! :innocent:

Hello HUBB people.

The lovely Kristina and I have volunteered to present our practical camera workshop again for all those who are interested.

It would seem stories are a big theme with any travel group so I am posting a few very short visual stories. I want stories to be one of the outcomes people can start to get to grips with.

So the "Tent Story" is a very simple short story:

I met this man who told me how much he liked his tent, he also explained how he fitted it all into his boxes and the poles into a box tube near the right rear indicator

Well impressed I was.

So the breakdown will be a focus on getting to grips with your camera.

The exercises are simple enough, but will help you to have a greater appreciation of getting better outcomes of the photos you are already taking.

Sometimes one photo can tell the story, sometimes it is a series of photos.

I did this photo a day blog last year (never missed a day) and there are many stand alone images telling stories and many groups of images telling stories.

:thumbup1: Good question. When I've seen Grant do the session in the past, he has had a bike on hand which he has extracted the wheel from. I don't know what bike he has lined up this time but even if it's not the same as yours you could have a word with him. Or Trix who is one of the Crew Leaders on the Gate Crew and you'll have seen in the last few shots from Ken. Having said all of that, you'll quite likely find people with bikes such as yours who are absolutely happy to share knowledge. It's part of what the HUBB UK is about. :thumbup1:

One of the things I really enjoyed last year at the HUBB UK was seeing all the expedition vehicles. Some of these guys have got amazing rigs. Some hard core journeys happened with them too. bier

I've got this public talking thing down now... well at least I don't shake as much as I used to. Last year I was supposed to do a webcam presentation live from Iraq but the connection went, so having composed a presentation in my head as I rode through Eastern Turkey I found myself with no one to tell my tales to. This year I won't be relying on internet I'll be telling about the trip that lead the the new book Ureka that comes out in May. As well as Iraq and Turkey it covers The Cuacaus region and my new favourite country Georgia. Looking forward to telling why I loved that diverse country which is only the size of Ireland so much.

The Great Game: Central Asia Overland

I'm honoured to be asked to speak at the HUBB UK event. Here is a few details about my upcoming talk.

In 2013 I attempted a solo overland journey by vehicle across Central Asia.

Through a previous trip to Afghanistan, as part of the first ever cricket team to tour and play the national side in 2009, the seed was planted for the expedition across Central Asia. I always wanted to return to Afghanistan and play another game of cricket (something I successfully achieved at the beginning of June 2013).

I was also inspired by Peter Hopkirk's books covering the history of the last 200 years, I wanted to visit the area immortalised by The Great Game. I set out to explore present day Central Asia along the former Silk Road routes, retracing the steps of the players and the historical events of The Great Game. Through the interaction with the local people, cultures and landscape, my was aim is to compare and contrast the historical version with modern day Central Asia.

Travelling from London to Russia I planned to join the Silk Road and head east to China though the "Stans" north of Afghanistan. Then head south via Laos to Malaysia in South East Asia. After shipping the vehicle to India I headed west via India, Nepal, Pakistan, Iran, and Turkey and finally Europe to London.

I want to share my motivations for the journey. Starting from a position of no experience in overland vehicle journeys to completing the a 30,000 mile journey through some the worlds biggest trouble spots. Discovering that Central Asia isn't really as the dangerous a place the media regularly portray it to be. I'll be giving some insight to how the region has been impacted by the worlds superpowers over the course of the last two centuries. Sharing the ups and downs of this amazing adventure and showing that anybody with the desire to take on a challenge like this can do it. Through a mix of serious, not so serious and downright amusing stories, I'll share my adventure.
